Bonny Posted December 2, 2007 Posted December 2, 2007 I am going to try to make it on my own, but might be very hard on a budget of next to nothing. First question is, where can I get lead (other than from lead pellets) for a few quid? Other thing I need to know is: can lead hold heat long enough to reach 327 degrees under a wood fire? Thanks. Lead can be obtained from fishing weights as well as the sources listed by WarezWally. Almost everyone has some old fishing weights lying around or can easily get them. Lead should be easilt melted over a wood fire. Here's some more info to read...should answer all your questions about lead media and how to make.http://www.pyrosociety.org.uk/forum/index....t=255&start=255
oskarchem Posted December 2, 2007 Posted December 2, 2007 What contry do you live in DJ? the UK?? just go to a gun shop and ask for some lead pellets.
DJPork Posted December 2, 2007 Author Posted December 2, 2007 Deep in the country side of Northern Ireland. Perhaps one of the most pyro-unfriendly countries to be in. God, the looks I got when I went into a chemist a good while back asking for KNO3 and sulfur in a town notorious for IRA activity. Needless to say that they wouldn't sell it to me as I couldn't tell her what it was for... She looked as if she was going to call the police or something.. But nah thanks for the info - should be a fun new project, and I'm glad I don't have to nick the brass. Can't believe I didn't think of going to a scrapyard, Northern Ireland is 90% scrap yards. *Kicks self in face*. How can I be sure what I have is lead? So far I've got: Non-ferrous, V. dense, dull grey colour... That's about it. I suppose the wieght alone might be enough to tell. Unless there's something else mind-numbingly simple that I'm too retarded to think of right now? Thanks again, never knew it was so simple. Yay.
Pyroblast Posted December 2, 2007 Posted December 2, 2007 Lead is very soft, and can easily be bent with pliers. A lead ball will actually get quite deformed after many hours of milling (Mine did at least).
