ST1DinOH Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 possible silly question but is there a source of dextrin (or equivilant binder) available anywhere or is that something i must order. i got some rice hulls from a friend, and i'm itching to coat em in meal but i'm gonna need some dextrin from what i've read. just curious if i can hit up a store at lunch today to get what i need or if i should submit my order today to get it asap. basicly how "available" is dextrin and does it go by any other name and/or have a substitute thats easy to buy just about anywhere?
Tweetybird88 Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 You can buy corn starch at the grocery store and from there its just a matter of sticking it in an oven.

jacob Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 You simplly take the corn starch and spread it out as thin as you can on a bakeing pan, and bake it on a low seting untill it turns golden brown, but if it's turning black it's burning, i'm not sure what temperature i used when i did it but a search should bring it up, i think PGF may have a tutorial on his website. good luck.

When it's done, it will be light yellow/gold in color. that sound about right to everyone? and if so is there any quality difference in chem store dextrin and the home-made kind?
Mumbles Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 That sounds right to me. I use around 350, bumping it up to 425 toward the end, but I have no idea what good it does. The dextrin turns out fine. I've had many different shades of dextrin, and never had a problem with poor binding. It is said that the best dextrin available is acid catalysed, but this isn't something you can do without a dedicated apparatus. Cargill sells it as 171PSC, but thats about all I know of that. I have some and it does indeed work well, but I don't know if it's that much better over home cooked stuff. Some say that home cooked stuff is better as it is more carefully controlled, but I have seen zero tests to back those claims up.

oskarchem Posted November 18, 2007 Posted November 18, 2007 Hey, just a quesion probably also stupid but what the hell... I've made my own dextrin the colour was gold/brown and I was just wondeing how dose Dextrin and let's say BP look?? (once the water is added) Mine makes a sort of soft ball And it need to dry for about 2 days...
Mumbles Posted November 18, 2007 Posted November 18, 2007 Sounds fine to me. I can't tell any real color difference when it's wetted. It all looks black to me. When just screened in, it may look a bit more grey or green.
