copper chloride

I got copper chloride a little while again and have been using it to make my fires blue. I was wondering if i could make stars or fountains with it, but i only found one and was wondering if there was more?

CuCl2 is a bit too hygroscopic to be too useful overall in stars and such. You may be able to make flares or something out of it.

CuCl is too unstable to be used in pyro really. There has been some work done by Clive Jennings-White, but it is little more than a novelty compound.

Mumbles I have to disagree with you, CuCl is a very stable compound if you keep it sealed in your closet. I use it a lot to make beautiful blue stars. its a great compound.

CuCl2 really doesn't have any place in pyro

I'm not too familiar with NC, but in theory would it be possible to use a xylene solution of NC to bind a star using an overly hydroscopic ingredient in order to keep water from ruining the stars?

Besides the hygroscopisity of CuCl2 im not so sure about its spectrum. I know that in most compositions the coloring agent is CuCl whether it is added into the composiotion or formed in the air while the star burns. Maybe CuCl2 could work fine while dry but defenetly it isnt too fun to work with.

Mumbles I dont understand why you are so against CuCl? can you explain?

It's water, air, and light sensitive to begin with. It should be a pure white product. Any grey or brown means the product has already begun to decompose. If somehow you have miraculously gotten it in a pure form into a composition, and bound and dried it without any decomposition, it is going to be decomposed in the air while burning anyway and will have to reform the CuCl molecule for any sort of blue production. I really don't see the need for a much more expensive chemical that by the time you get around to using it, will likely be significantly degraded, and offers no real advantage over any other colorants.

Well I use it all the time. The decomposition is minimal ... yes its not white I agree with you but its only the outer side of it. It is still the same insoluble chemical ... and it does guarantee you that there will be more CuCl forming in the air

Please, do explain how having CuCl in the comp GUARANTEES there is CuCl in the flame?

I think i misunderstood you . The coloring of the flame is because CuCl forms and heats up to a certain point. Having the wanted amount of CuCl in the coposition in the first place solves the problem of thinking of the best conditions for it to form.
