nick2354 Posted August 27, 2007 Posted August 27, 2007 I know instant cool packs contain Ammonia Nitrate could i use that in place for Potassium Nitrate as they are both 5.1 oxidiser? (i don't know much about chem, as you can tell). I wish to make gunpowder or any other fuel/oxidizer type mix. At my local "bargain store" i found that a product they sell known as "Hand blasters" (these 2 balls that you hit together to make a bang). Well, they contain Potassium Chlorate, Glue, Powdered glass and Sulfur. Would there be ANYWAY i could extract the Potassium chlorate? thank you in advance, and i know my questions are stupid.
rocket Posted August 27, 2007 Posted August 27, 2007 No you can’t use the NH4NO3 in place of the KNO3, NH4NO3 isn’t a good oxidizer and it is to hygroscopic to be useful. You could use the NH4NO3 to make KNO3. NH4NO3 + KOH = KNO3 + NH3 + H2O. With the KClO3 things you could try dissolving them in water to get the tiny amount of KClO3 out.
FrankRizzo Posted August 28, 2007 Posted August 28, 2007 No, substitutions like that don't work well. If you have a hardware store nearby, many brands of stump remover are potassium nitrate with very little or no contaminants. Write down the manufactures of the products available in your local store(s), and then search the internet for their respective MSDS to determine relative purity. Potassium chlorate can be had by adding calcium hypochlorite pool shock to potassium sulfate (from the garden shop), filtering the insoluble calcium sulfate that precipitates, and then boiling the potassium hypochlorite solution causing it to decompose into potassium chlorate. However, this method is not very cost effective if can order it from a hobby supply company for less than $10/lb.
nick2354 Posted August 28, 2007 Author Posted August 28, 2007 I live Australia i cant get KNO3, iv'e tryed everywhere. Places it isnt, in Australia. It inst sold as a stump removerIt inst sold as a FertilizerIt inst sold as a diuretic ITS SO ANNOYING I CANT GET ANY OXIDSIER'S except for calcium nitrate and i was told that it's to hygroscopic. Is KNO3 sold at butcher's stores or meat supply stores. thankyou, in advance
rocket Posted August 28, 2007 Posted August 28, 2007 You obesely haven’t looked hard enough then, I know plenty of people around Australia who have got it. No you won’t get it as stump remover BUT you will find it as fertilizer you can’t just go into any bunnings or nursery and expect to find it because you won’t, you have to look on the industrial side of thing. Fertilizer suppliers to plant growers farmers ect. Don’t even bother looking into the meat industry because it will be very hard to get or imposable and it would be food grade which is WAY to expensive. If you want it so bad make the damn stuff and stop whinging that you cant get it.
nick2354 Posted August 28, 2007 Author Posted August 28, 2007 How am i suppose to go find agricultural suppliers as i live in the CITY. i don't drive cause of my age which as i mentioned is 15. My mum or dad wont take me out into the country. There is only 1 store nearby called "organic grown" which would be only chance of getting KNO3 (i read that one Aussie got it from a spice shop). FYI: i wasn't "BITCHING". I don't care that you found it easily probably cause your in your 20's, so you can drive to places. or its just incredibly hard to get in South Australia. Do you know if there is any members from SA that found it? if so could you get them to PM me. And dont say i haven't tryed looking i have searched allot on the web and havent found anything mentioning where to get KNO3 in SA.
rocket Posted August 28, 2007 Posted August 28, 2007 I live in the city too, your right about the age thing though, I'm 19 so it does make it easer. The web isn't the best place to find products in Australia the phone book is the best way, hydro shops are another source so call a few of them up.
fizeau Posted August 28, 2007 Posted August 28, 2007 ITS SO ANNOYING I CANT GET ANY OXIDSIER'S except for calcium nitrate and i was told that it's to hygroscopic. If you can get calcium nitrate boil it in water together with K2CO3 (pottery) for a while. CaCO3 will form, wait until CaCO3 goes down to the ground. The clearr solution contents the KNO3.
nick2354 Posted August 30, 2007 Author Posted August 30, 2007 when you say hydroponic shops, do you mean organic stores (places where they sell organic stuff)?
rocket Posted August 30, 2007 Posted August 30, 2007 No, they sell the stuff to grow plants in a hydroponic set ups, where plants grown in water. They have a hole range of chems, nitrates acids ect
