Pyroblast Posted August 27, 2007 Posted August 27, 2007 I was playing around with some crackling paper fuse and was wondering what exactly makes those delayed pops that go all over the place? Is it some type of hollow grain or something? Or a type of chemical that just pops like that?By the way, I tried searching and came up empty handed. Thanks in advance.
frogy Posted August 27, 2007 Posted August 27, 2007 MgAl, FeTi, FeAl, Al, and Mg would all just make sparks if they where burning... I doubt that they use crackling microstars, but thats the only thing I can think of... They are make out of Lead Tetraoxide, Bismuth Trioxide, or Bismuth Subcarbonate mixed with MgAl and Copper (II) Oxide... Here's tutorial: http://www.pyroguide.com/index.php?title=C...ling_microstars
pudidotdk Posted August 27, 2007 Posted August 27, 2007 Actually if it's the type of fuse I'm thinking of, it contains crackling microstars. It's pretty much like sticky match, but with crackling microstars instead of BP granules.
crazyboy25 Posted August 27, 2007 Posted August 27, 2007 are there any formulas for crackling stars i was thinking you could just mix them in but then it wouldn't roll and they could go off if they were pumped.
Mumbles Posted August 27, 2007 Posted August 27, 2007 Coarse MgAl actually sizzles and pops as it burns frogy. Ti would give little pops, but unless the crackles are accompanied by bright white sparks shooting everywhere, I have my doubts about this. I don't think FeTi does this. I've never heard much about people using TiAl, though I have some. I bet it would make a nice flitter effect. My personal opinion would be microstars. Perhaps the fines that come from the normal sized microstars. A third option is some kind of glitter-type mixture. If anyone has been close to a glitter mine or comet or something with longer terminal delays will know what I'm talking about. It definatly has distinct pops and crackles. To make this kind of effect, coarser MgAl is sometimes employed as well. I'm not extremely familiar with this type of fuse. I do have some flying fish crackling fuse at home if this is the same stuff, but it doesn't sound like it.
pudidotdk Posted August 27, 2007 Posted August 27, 2007 Pyroblast, can you show us a picture or describe it better? The type I was thinking of is bought as a commercial, and is much the kind that is like crackling balls, but made with crackling microstars like sticky match. A visco fuse is used to ignite a length, and the whole length is wrapped in red tissue paper. Is it close?
frogy Posted August 27, 2007 Posted August 27, 2007 http://www.cannonfuse.com/store/pc/viewPrd...=2&idproduct=10 I think thats similar to what he is talking about.... He probably either got it from CannonFuse or Skylighter... The fuse burns producing crackling noises like small crackling microstars, but it also produces colors, so I'm going to go with Mumbles and say it's actually just random microstars of whatever color the fuse is...
Pyroblast Posted August 28, 2007 Author Posted August 28, 2007 I got this stuff from Pyro Creations. Pudidotdk, it sounds like you're talking about this stuff. I took some apart and inside I found two strands of 1/16" visco and little black microstars on sticky paper. Looks like this fuse is just plain dragon eggs. The visco is in there just to keep it going.
Mumbles Posted August 28, 2007 Posted August 28, 2007 I was wondering about that. It's also called crackling whips or something similar. They are dragon eggs, do doubt about it.

frogy Posted September 29, 2007 Posted September 29, 2007 ??? who asked for that tutorial.. there's already tons of post about it and most people already know about them... Here's a guide I think me or Pudi tried to simplify http://pyroguide.com/index.php?title=Crackling_microstars More of organize than simplify... but it does make it easier
