kxkid Posted July 16, 2007 Posted July 16, 2007 Hello my first post.I just got some potassium nitrate and magnalium 300-325,what is the proper mixture. Ive tried different ratio's but so far have had no luck.
mormanman Posted July 16, 2007 Posted July 16, 2007 Well helloUm first start off easy if you haven't yet (I'm just saying). KNO3/sugar smoke bombs are fun. Well anyway try thegreenman.me.uk.You can make flash with plaster of paris and mg. Theres already a thread on it so just look for it.
pudidotdk Posted July 16, 2007 Posted July 16, 2007 Generally one should not start out with flash powder even if it's nitrate based. If you lack in just a tiny bit knowledge in flash powder you should not make it. Making flash powder is dangerous even in small quantities. Start small! As mormanman suggest, try out smoke bomb first.Later try black powder, make a few fountains, rockets etc. 'Till then you'll know more about flash powder, look back 'till now and say "Aaah, I didn't knew that back then. Good I didn't make flash powder back then I could've been seriously injured!"
kxkid Posted July 17, 2007 Author Posted July 17, 2007 I'm not really as young as my username suggests,i've been tinkering with fireworks for 20 years or so,i used to help my brother make black powder out of charcoal and sulfur and something else maybe potassium i think it was,and i think i need a dash of sulfur to my mix is probably the problem because its not igniting with a match just a little bit of sparkle and usually the match just goes out,i used to make big stuff just buying firecrackers and dumping the powder into bigger cases but that gets rather expensive.someone told me tonight that flash can be made with just table salt ( 3 parts salt and 1 part charcoal) has anyone tried this? I'm sorry maybe i used the wrong forum,i thought i would use the newbie one because im new on here not fireworks in general, huh huh the old kno3 smoke bomb,i've been using that formula to make fuses and it works great nice and slow.
pudidotdk Posted July 17, 2007 Posted July 17, 2007 20 years of fireworks and still not knowing the formula for BP, taking powder out of firecrackers and formula with salt and charcoal?Sorry, you still have a long way to go there
kxkid Posted July 17, 2007 Author Posted July 17, 2007 I already mentioned the formula for BP in my last post. That was some years ago though and i've already moved on from that.We called it saltpeter instead of KNO3 back then thats what i couldn't remember. The salt and charcoal i didn't believe either thats why i threw it out there instead of canning up some willow and burning it for myself.I am not a professional by any means but i didn't just fall off the turnip truck like everybody on here assumes,,I know how dangerous that stuff can be and thats why i never would mix up a large batch at a time ,learned that the hard way. years ago scraping caps for firecracker Gun powder.I know some smart guy is gonna come back and say well gunpower isn't anything like flash and i'm gonna come on and say well i've already handled flash in my baby years remember the firecrackers and still have all my fingers and hands,,sorry i'm probably going to be booted off here but i had to defend myself against assumptions.
crazyboy25 Posted July 18, 2007 Posted July 18, 2007 you may have a good deal of experience however even if you have 20+ years of pyro experience your post certainly don't show it if you are serious about pyro STOP breaking open firecrackers and scraping gunpowder of caps MAKE IT YOURSELF there is TONS of info all over this site i suggest smoke bombs black powder small rockets fountains and RESEARCH i am not trying to flame you but honestly does it sound reasonable that salt+charcoal=high explosive? come on do research start small and advance from there ask question just not ones about flash salutes an scraping gunpowder off caps. have fun
mormanman Posted July 18, 2007 Posted July 18, 2007 Here. Read all of this before anything to crazy.1. The rules (Very helpful) once your done with that go to #22. #2 I have something in there that I am ashamed of and anyone that has read it most likely knows what I'm talking about. Then number 3 after but be careful.3. Number 3 These are good places and be careful in everything you do accidents happen don't get me wrong there. We're not trying (or at least I'm not) to be mean just be care full and don't take anything explosive apart.
al93535 Posted July 18, 2007 Posted July 18, 2007 Oh god.. He is asking a simple question, has it in the correct area, and just wants a little help. Try a 50:50 Ratio by weight to start with. You DO have a scale right? You cannot do it by volume. I might also try 55:45 nitrate:mgal. It IS possible to add sulfur to the mix, but I would think its better without. Your mix should be relatively easy to ignite if your nitrate is a fine powder and the mgal is really 300 mesh. Be careful with the mix you have, make only a gram or two at a time until you get the hang of what you are doing. DO NOT USE A MATCH! You can easily remove fingers, and without a doubt your life as well. Telling someone not to do something because they are inexperienced is stupid when you all know well off he will try it anyways. NOONE here has started out a pro.
