Polumna Posted July 8, 2007 Posted July 8, 2007 Hi all I have made my first succesfull blackpowder rocket´s:D.The tube( homemade) ID was 1/2 inch, length is 7cm, noozle is 3mm and core 1cm deep. The rocket was powered by 15g BP, the second one from 20g BP.Balance test was perfect, too.I didn´t attach a salute header or anything else because I am not a patient Boy and can´t wait till it is dark.So I decided to light these rockets at daytime( sorry )The BP was made with mortar and Pestle, the charcoal( willow) was coarse( 150mesh).All the chemicals were thrown in the mortar& pestle, then grinded until it is a homogenious mass, then I wetted the mix and grind for 2min. Then I have granulated it with a windowscreen.I ram the powder as hard as I could and the rocket-casing made a pling-sound. So here you go: 1st one: http://youtube.com/watch?v=dg7GoDEPwBY Second one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6WA19-jovJs I was very, very impressed, because of the poor quality BP, I thought that the rocket will stay on the ground. Rockets are my favourite type of fireworks now. Polumna
gods knight Posted July 9, 2007 Posted July 9, 2007 i have a mortar and pestle maybe i should try it, and save the mess of precipitation(don't have ball mill)
Polumna Posted July 9, 2007 Author Posted July 9, 2007 Hi godsknight, It is very important that the charcoal is not too fine, otherwise your rocket will CATO.I damp the blackpowder a bit, and then I ram the damp blackpowder in the tube. Is there a chance that the blackpowder charge in the motor will crack while drying? thanks, Polumna

aquaman Posted July 9, 2007 Posted July 9, 2007 hey Polumna the second rocket camera angle was perfect, nice job! The only thing that worries me is when you wrote this as a reply on youtube: thanks.I am planning on a 10g salute-rocket with kmno4/mg flashpowder:) That flash is very powerful and very instable so just be careful with it and if you can, don't use it at all.
Polumna Posted July 10, 2007 Author Posted July 10, 2007 Hi aquaman:) There is no need to be worried about me.i am VERY careful wth this sort of flashpowder and use static spray everytime.I just use the Kmno4, because I cant get a powerfull oxidizier like KCLO4. Can I use BaNO3/Mg or BaNO3/ paintaluminium as a substitute? PS: I have heard that baNO3 is a very powerfull oxidizier,is this true? polumna
Wyvern Posted July 10, 2007 Posted July 10, 2007 With coated Mg i cant see a problem with using KNO3 for an oxidiser
gods knight Posted July 10, 2007 Posted July 10, 2007 can you tell me how long you grinded it(mortar and pastel) thx 4 ur response
Jason Posted July 10, 2007 Posted July 10, 2007 All the chemicals were thrown in the mortar& pestle, then grinded until it is a homogenious mass, then I wetted the mix and grind for 2min. Found in the original post.
Polumna Posted July 10, 2007 Author Posted July 10, 2007 Hi all So I have made a 200g blackpowder batch made with mortar and pestle,I store the BP in my gardenhouse Anyway, that took 30minutes including sieving etc.It is still a bit damp and I will make some rockets, because the holidays will beginn in 2days hurrey! iu´ll try bigger ones with a bigger payload.Ho man, they fly so straight and so high, can´t believe that I have made them to the KNO3 as a oxidizier: I want to have a very bassy report, but I dont want to use Kmno4 anymore,I have seen this video on youtube where someone use baNO3 as a flashpowder oxidizier:( sorry moderators for the salute videos ) BaNO3/Al as a composition: http://youtube.com/watch?v=22ocDP2HFrE BaNO3/Mg as a composition( shot from a flaregun with whistle propellant) http://youtube.com/watch?v=VMhRq_u0QNo PS: Dear mods, If these videos are not allowed here, please delete them Polumna
Jason Posted July 10, 2007 Posted July 10, 2007 I would be careful with baNO3, as it's quite toxic. How come you don't just stick to regular KlCO4? Or is that too hard for you to come by?
Polumna Posted July 10, 2007 Author Posted July 10, 2007 Hi Yea, it is very, very hard for me to come by.i haven´t got a perchlorate cell nor can I get something via ebay. The BaNO3 do I get from filtered sparklers. Polumna
Mumbles Posted July 11, 2007 Posted July 11, 2007 There is no reason for this thread. There are other perfectly good blackpowder rocket threads. I believe I'd talked to you before about not starting a new thread for every new thing you do, or question you have. The Barium nitrate you're getting from filtered sparklers is going to be no way pure. Yes, using only barium nitrate decent reports are possible. a 1:1 mix between it and magnesium will give a decent report, and will be slightly green, especially at a distance.
