qwezxc12 Posted June 22, 2007 Posted June 22, 2007 I wanted to make a fan rack for 2in comets and mines. I also wanted a normal straight up rack for small aerial shells and salutes...whats a pyro to do? Make one that can do both! The two bottom block rest between the 1x4 side rails and the top blocks wedge in. A light tap with a hammer will make them nice and tight. I shot some test comets straight up and two fans of comets and bag mines from it last night and it worked out great both ways. I hope this design is useful to anyone who wants both types of racks. 8X straight uphttp://www.apcforum.net/files/8x2straightrack.jpg 5X fanhttp://www.apcforum.net/files/5x2fanrack.jpg Design & Dimensionshttp://www.apcforum.net/files/2inmortarrackdims2.jpg
pudidotdk Posted June 22, 2007 Posted June 22, 2007 That rack looks nice. I can see at the end of your tubes it "crubles." It's kinda hard to get off with sandpaper, but a knife will do.
Frozentech Posted June 22, 2007 Posted June 22, 2007 Looks great ! I wouldn't worry about a few threads of HDPE around the muzzle. Those are gone after a few shots. So.... how much are you gonna be selling those for ? LOL
qwezxc12 Posted June 23, 2007 Author Posted June 23, 2007 And how much did the final result cost One 2x3 = $2.65One 1/4 = $2.78Twenty-six #8 x 2" DeckMate screws = $.40?Eight 2" mortars from Pyrogear = $16.40 Answer = Cheap.
psyco_1322 Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 Ill post picks of my 20 shot 1 3/4" rack. \||/ <Its shaped like that. Five shot rows. Fiberglass tubes. There about an 1/8" from a 2" tube though. I dont like them being that big but its ok.
Bonny Posted August 27, 2007 Posted August 27, 2007 That rack looks nice. I can see at the end of your tubes it "crubles." It's kinda hard to get off with sandpaper, but a knife will do. You can buy a "de-burring tool" like in the pic from many hardware stores...one quick circle and its nice and clean. works on plastic and metal.
nath0r Posted August 28, 2007 Posted August 28, 2007 Thats a really nice rack, im looking at building a few pretty soon ready for November 5th. I can imagine the wood wont look at new as it does after a couple of shots, nice burn marks from quickmatch and fuses etc
jlmemt Posted September 30, 2007 Posted September 30, 2007 A router bit also does a nice job if you have one! Nice design! Jason
omijam Posted December 3, 2007 Posted December 3, 2007 newbe here, can i use 2" sch 40 PVC??, if not the best, what other materials homedepot have i can use?
ST1DinOH Posted December 3, 2007 Posted December 3, 2007 newbe here, can i use 2" sch 40 PVC??, if not the best, what other materials homedepot have i can use? oh god no... PVC shatters and sends nice little razor sharp chunks flying at you. so does just about anything you can get at home depot. buy some nice solid HDPE or fiberglass tubes and you'll be much happier and safer. for HDPE i'd suggest noel at www.pyrogear.net thats where i've gotten all my 1.75 inch guns from.
Chris Posted December 3, 2007 Posted December 3, 2007 newbe here, can i use 2" sch 40 PVC??, if not the best, what other materials homedepot have i can use? It's generally advised to avoid PVC in pyro. PVC tubes can be relatively safe with smaller devices, but shooting two inchers from pvc would be out of my comfort zone. I could consider using PVC burried in sand or dirt, but as a part of the rack application, can't recommend it.
psyco_1322 Posted December 4, 2007 Posted December 4, 2007 Just finished my 4" single gun rack. It looks really nice, even has a handle. Ill get pics of it with my other one I never got around to getting snap shots of. Oh and no you cant use PVC. Why? Because we said so, and thats just how it is. Go buy some cheap fiberglass tubes, or paper if you can find some. Just dont send more than 7 consecutive rounds through the fiberglass with out letting it cool, same goes for HDPE. Bad things start to happen to hot guns. I think i might set up some ply wood around a PVC mortar and throw a shell in upside down and take pics of what happens to it to show every one.
psyco_1322 Posted December 10, 2007 Posted December 10, 2007 Here is some pics of my racks. Single 4" and 20 shot 1 7/8". http://www.apcforum.net/files/S4022023.JPG http://www.apcforum.net/files/S4022022.JPG http://www.apcforum.net/files/S4022021.JPG http://www.apcforum.net/files/S4022020.JPG
psyco_1322 Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 Im bumping this topic as the un official mortar thread and a nice thing for the newcomers to read. If thats ok.
TheSidewinder Posted April 17, 2008 Posted April 17, 2008 Fine and dandy. With shooting season upcoming (for us in the frozen north), it should help newcomers with some ideas for racking.
ULTRABUF Posted July 2, 2008 Posted July 2, 2008 These are all my racks'n'things. This is my single 3"gun http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee243/u...gleGun3inch.jpg 4" single mortarhttp://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee243/u...gleGun4inch.jpg 3" mortar rackhttp://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee243/u...hmortarrack.jpg 4" double rackhttp://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee243/u...bleGun4inch.jpg This is a rack I made out of some commercial tubes, a saran wrap tube, and some random tube I had lying around. I'm going to use it to shoot off 3 small mines followed by 3 shells all fused together.http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee243/u...t/Multishot.jpg
psyco_1322 Posted July 2, 2008 Posted July 2, 2008 Wow, nice 3" rack. I will be definately bringing back enough 3 & 4" tubes to make some racks when I go to the convention. I wanna shoot some shows but all I really have for multi-shot racks is the bumble bee up there^.
ULTRABUF Posted July 2, 2008 Posted July 2, 2008 Thanks, I made it in shop class with scrap plywood that the teacher got for free, so I paid nothing for the rack. He asked me what it was and I was like "... uhh, a pipe rack, you know, to hold pipe out in the shop." And my little double shot 4" was free too, made it from some scraps my dad had from working on the house.
ULTRABUF Posted July 4, 2008 Posted July 4, 2008 Double posting, but I made this today.http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee243/u...steelmortar.jpgA 2" ID steel mortar for liquid fireballs. I just welded a 14" long piece of exaust pipe to a 6"x6" piece of steel plate, painted it, and bolted it to a couple pieces of scrap wood for added stability.
frogy Posted July 4, 2008 Posted July 4, 2008 Ahhhh... awesome... I'm going to have to order a few gallons of methanol, I found a source that I believe is $7/gal... Pretty cool effect for 50 grams of xCl + 1 gallon of Methanol... though I think that's a "giant" 4" fireball..... Try 25 grams of SrCl2 and 1/2 gallon of Methanol... Giant red flames are very pretty
