BoomBaby Posted Wednesday at 08:28 PM Posted Wednesday at 08:28 PM (edited) First post be gentle.... We're putting together a cake of 7/8" N1 Gold Glitter comets shot from 1"x 6" tubes, a few questions for those experienced in these things: Would you prime the N1 comets or just add a little more lift? I have a few embers make it back to the ground with 10% lift. Comets are weighing 17 grams and my test shots have 1.7/1.8 grams of my hot BP lift, I'll likely go with 2 grams to get some more height but maybe the answer is to prime to get a quicker burn. What's the opinion on shooting without a piston/disc under the comet? I tested with a 1' disc with 1/8' hole and it seems to reduce shattering but I'd love to avoid buying 1600 more paper products if possible. Look forward to feedback, thanks. Carbon796 Posted Wednesday at 08:53 PM Posted Wednesday at 08:53 PM I would probably lift small comets like that, at 15% lift to start. For those tubes. But, it would also depend on how you want them to look in the sky. I liked my single fire comets to arc over. For cylinder shells I never primed my glitter comets. For larger single fire comets, I would prime both faces. And light them from both ends. If those comets are shattering from such a gentle lift. You might have a binder issue or a consolidation issue. I generally only put a disk under my comets, when they got to 4".
dgsh009 Posted Thursday at 10:34 AM Posted Thursday at 10:34 AM Nice and well-organized comet and mortar. this link is glitter comet tutorial by ned gorski , i wish be useful for you : https://www.skylighter.com/blogs/how-to-make-fireworks/large-reloadable-glitter-comets
ThunderEx Posted Thursday at 10:59 AM Posted Thursday at 10:59 AM Cool! BUT... not that I say you are but if you're working with energetic materials inside your home, please stop right now! The consequences of an accident is really really bad on so many levels... Read up on safety! With love!
BoomBaby Posted Thursday at 11:43 AM Author Posted Thursday at 11:43 AM The energetic stuff is all outside, just a bunch of paper getting assembled inside 👍 1
Zumber Posted Friday at 02:59 AM Posted Friday at 02:59 AM That's a massive shot. You may attempt few test with primed comets also another one with and without a piston disk before assembling entire shot. If you press comets well and prepare it correctly ( activation of binder & proper drying) then there will be no issue of scattering, if still problem persist you may wrap comet with a turn of kraft and wheat paste, in this case you should prime comets well.
