Narrrz Posted March 15 Posted March 15 Hi there, As a hobby/semi scientific project I've been trying to replicate linseed oil autoignition, which apparently is/has been a semi-common issue working with the stuff, but so far I've met with abject failure. My first attempts didn't use rags, just tissue paper, and it seems that perhaps part of the equation is using cotton, which when soaked in oil can apparently autoignite as low as 120C. However, even switching to cotton, I haven't been able to get the linseed oil to catch slight spontaneously; the environment it's being tested in its very well ventilated and I'm thinking it may require substantially more insulation/reactive surface than I'd estimated to achieve any result. I'm also only using regular, raw linseed oil at this stage, not boiled, though I have experimented with mixing it with certain solvents that can supposedly accelerate its drying. Does anyone have personal experience with linseed oil catching alight spontaneously?
