CesarBT Posted March 2 Posted March 2 Hello, I'm new to this hobby and I was wondering if it is safe to grind BP with ceramic balls?
Arthur Posted March 2 Posted March 2 (edited) First remember that pyro, compounds and black powder are flammable and/or explosives, so work on the basis that they might explode using good places, good methods and good PPE then you have likely mitigated most of the risks and hazards. BUT nothing is totally safe! Clean ceramic media is usually fine for ball milling, it's also easier on the ball mill as it turns with less power used. ADDED, NEVER use glass balls. Marbles look so ready made for mill media but they shed tiny glass particles which make the compound hyper sensitive. Edited March 2 by Arthur
Richtee Posted March 2 Posted March 2 Nothing is safe about this hobby. You are making things that catch fire/explode on purpose. Mitigation of risk is the key. Well said Arthur. Get ya some brass balls Well..lead will work, but it’s unfashionable these days.
Mumbles Posted March 3 Posted March 3 Generally if you're looking to mill black powder or other flammable compositions, you will want to source high alumina ceramic. It is more spark resistant than more typical grades which contain a higher proportion of silica.
