ClintonPyro Posted January 26 Posted January 26 I made a tooling for 5/8 I'd core burning rocket, the spindle is 4inch in length and 8mm in diameter and its non tapered, from top to nozzle is both 8mm. Does it still perform good? Despite the non tapered spindle and what you guys think about the outcome, thanks for answering my question
ThunderEx Posted January 26 Posted January 26 I think you will have a hard time removing the finished motor from the spindle. It needs to be tapered to release! 1
DavidF Posted January 27 Posted January 27 This got discussed quite a bit in the above thread. On a 5/8" ID motor, it won't be AS great an issue to remove, but an 8mm spindle is half the diameter of the whole propellant grain! There's no mention of what type of coreburner rocket is being made, whether a tube support is used, rammed or pressed, etc... My guess is that the question will be answered with finality when the first rocket motor is made, and before it's flown 1
Mumbles Posted January 27 Posted January 27 If you find you need a tapered spindle for ease of use, some people have had success buying taper pins and using them. They may require a little polishing up, but it may be a solution if you find you're not getting good release of your rocket motor. Alternatively, you can taper it yourself using a drill and a file, sandpaper, or emory cloth. It's a little janky, but I've seen it work.
Almostparadise Posted January 28 Posted January 28 (edited) This is a 3 1/2" spindle i made for a 1/2" id motor (5" long).I made it from a 1/4" stainless steel bolt and a 1/2" locking collar for the base. I tapered it slightly as Mumbles suggested using a drill press as a makeshift lathe. These little rockets fly great! Without a slight taper your likely going to get frustrated with some motors sticking and others not. Edited January 28 by Almostparadise 1

I modified my tool, I shortened the spindle (2.5) and I slightly tapered it, about .5mm because I don't have a drill or angle grinder I only used sandpaper to tapered it it hard but I'm quite happy with the result

I shortened the spindle to 2.5 and tapered it about .5mm using only sand paper. when I'm able to get my hands on drill and angle grinder I'll comeback to my lonh spindle tooling. Still happy on my short spindle tool. 2
ThunderEx Posted January 28 Posted January 28 Great! Now you need to make the rammers! Centering the holes is a challenge without a lathe. 1
Almostparadise Posted January 28 Posted January 28 1/2" acrylic pipe with 1/4" bore. Just this is enough for the 4oz motors. 1
