dgsh009 Posted December 25, 2024 Posted December 25, 2024 Hello dears Do you have any idea for buid a hommade 40 mesh sieve ? Thanks
CountZero Posted December 25, 2024 Posted December 25, 2024 Are you asking how to make the actual metal fabric or how to mount it to a frame? If the latter, making a wodden frame and stapling the mesh to the bottom works. You can get a bit more creative and do them so you can stack several for example. Another option is to use a plastic box of some kind and cut out the bottom. Use a soldering Iron or something to melt the mesh in to the plastic.
Arthur Posted December 26, 2024 Posted December 26, 2024 You will not make the sieve screen with any accuracy. The mesh number is the number of holes (or wires!) per inch, getting the right wire size and weaving it is not a hand diy task. If you get a piece of mesh then yes you can melt it into a plastic bottle or funnel to separate granules into particular mesh cuts. Every country has suppliers or manufacturers of mesh, you need to find a supplier in your country or one who will ship to you.

Thanks I agree you just can't simply get proper mesh accuracy, I have made many sizes of screen for powder sieving, for making BP granules, for sorting out stars etc. I go to hardware shop and purchase steel wire mesh for granulating bp, steel sheets that already have circular holes of desired mm sizes for sorting out stars and I prepare wooden frame and I fix those screens over wooden frame using woodworking technology then hide sharp edges inside using another small wooden frame and fix it over first frame for personal safety while working. I have carpentery skills so it's easy for me. For screening powder, I have commercial brass screen.

Zumber Posted December 26, 2024 Posted December 26, 2024 You may visit hardware store and ask them about 40 mesh screen or they may tell you where to get it. Here I found 425 micron sieve on Amazon https://www.amazon.in/Sieve-Diameter-Micron-Stainless-Steel/dp/B0CJ5FFN2Z/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?crid=37YYRM5WU0VGJ&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.HQ0wzm1ftKwHdUIDrbiww7prJOxRrVftUG3MU1xg_Po5EIH__L4aFwrH7diTqJVc1z7vzcifZ7vSR_RwNGbvTSoTxDUEsLHpT-mTi0UjnG-6GiGLlXWUHJalgQlAAtoGUNff08o1jqZksdycnHGLaMX8M10V256VbIUW1myWQPUyiZtQA6TmHkiy-RqycbVwrejKg3wCHzzeJjvOqzTUrg.ujJvtiqbR49lAo3tm2mxAuw1OE995Jc8Omj2nPWqC70&dib_tag=se&keywords=40+mesh+sieve&qid=1735207937&sprefix=40+mesh+sie%2Caps%2C232&sr=8-3
Arthur Posted December 26, 2024 Posted December 26, 2024 You need to find a mesh supplier in your country, otherwise the shipping cost will be extreme. I can buy 300x300 of 40 mesh for £7 +P&P but the P&P to ship overseas would be excessive. There must be a supplier in your country or on Amazon (and the like) or maybe ebay and the like in your country.

Zumber Posted December 26, 2024 Posted December 26, 2024 Steel screens are expensive, if you purchase in a bulk they might comprise for a price but it seems you need a single piece 30 by 30 cm as you mentioned earlier.

SharkWhisperer Posted January 1 Posted January 1 (edited) What country are you located in? Per Arthur, it rather makes a difference regarding common use/availability... In the US, common window screening is often 25-30 mesh or so. Your post queries 40-mesh screens. For most pyrotechnic purposes (and muzzleloading BP uses), you'd probably have difficulty identifying a performance difference between comps or BP sized 30 vs 40 mesh.
