Hi everybody,

Everyone has to start somewhere, I just got a Harbor Freight rock tumbler and for the first test I decided to mill bentonite clay that was extra lumpy. I used marbles(all I have right now and I don't plan on using them for any chemicals) and my thinking was that it would pulverize the clay into a dust. I let it run over night and this was the result.

This was an interesting result and also unexpected.

Clay has more moisture than you'd think in it.  I've always had better luck using a blade mill, like a blender or coffee grinder from Goodwill, and passing it through a window screen. I don't have a lot of need for extremely fine clay, but smaller granules feel like they compress better. That said, it's cheap enough to buy the size you want from ceramic suppliers and not have to deal with the headache of trying to process a big bag of cat litter for me now.

I recently milled some BP without pre-drying the charcoal and got a similar result (see below) except that the spheres were actually pure BP, with no media in the center. Very odd! Moisture is certainly the culprit for this kind of behavior as Mumbles mentioned. Be aware of this, as it can drastically reduce your milling efficiency… IMG_9659.thumb.jpeg.cadaf2e49a17c52df30e43bccec52ef3.jpegIMG_9660.thumb.jpeg.ae9d69fadd4ef9029e512bd07ff2bbf8.jpeg
