Darkonez Posted October 25 Posted October 25 Hi guys please can you advise if this is what I need and if so does it require further treatment to be usable?
cmjlab Posted October 25 Posted October 25 (edited) You could try it (I never have), but I've made crackle (which it looks like you are trying). I couldn't find a msds for it, but similar items contain 5-10% nitrocellulose (12.5% N) and butylacetate + xylene as the primary solvents. I'm sure there are other additives in it. The stuff I use is NC in cotton linters form, or if I'm out, smokeless powder (doublebase) both of which have a higher level nitrated NC ~13.3% N, and the smokeless contains some percentage of NG. Ultimately, what i use is diluted with solvent to a 5-10% NC, which aside from nitration level, is similar to what the guitar lacquer could be. Long way to say, you'll probably have to try a batch and find out. If you've never made worming crackle though, it could get frustrating trying to troubleshoot since you wouldn't be able to quickly rule out the lacquer as a potential issue. Just start small. Good luck! Edited October 25 by cmjlab
Darkonez Posted October 25 Author Posted October 25 (edited) df3b75da-41da-46d6-96d3-ffd4ccc4e7d5.mov Made these crackling stars using the above then coated with a prime. Excuse the camera girl. I do believe you can hear the crack after a second of ignition. Edited October 25 by Darkonez
Darkonez Posted October 25 Author Posted October 25 Sorry wrong star posted 🤯 this is the correct one. I was trying a couple of stars and got muddled up with which was which ! cbe73103-1096-4ddd-87d1-64c6b8be87bd.mov
Carbon796 Posted October 26 Posted October 26 (edited) That can probably work. But, its nitration level is probably kinda weak. What you really want is nitrated gun cotton. Or better still green dot. Edited October 26 by Carbon796
cmjlab Posted October 27 Posted October 27 I don't usually download files, but I wanted to see your results. I'd have to look at your crackle formula again, but if the Crackle is working correctly you should get an almost firecracker or small gunshot level of loud with each crackle star..... I may have heard a small pop, unless your camera muted the audio automatically, but not what I'd expect from crackle. Have you tried lighting individual crackle star on the ground? Then you'll know if they are working.
Darkonez Posted October 28 Author Posted October 28 After watching some videos posted here of others people crackle I can confirm my crackle was not very good more of a click than a crack ! And took a long time heating to make it happen. A new small batch with better prepared chemicals is drying out now so will be testing them very soon. I’m using the AFN 3 crackle formula with Bismuth not lead. The only item I’m not sure of is my NC Laquer but this should give me an answer when tested.
Darkonez Posted October 29 Author Posted October 29 Stars dry 5-6 in a cupcake paper case and a 1/4 tsp of fast BP black matched and twisted to contain, a little masking tape to hold together! I can confirm using the AFN 3 crackle formula with my above mentioned NC Laquer used as it comes out the tin works well. Stars 1-1.5 mm IMG_4388.mov
SKC Posted December 5 Posted December 5 Depends upon the amount of nitrocellulose present along with the base of your lacquer. What I can say that I use almost same quality of lacquer here with no problem. What you can do is you may liquify it with some acetone if you should need. My crackle formula consists of Lead not Bismuth.
