erdem Posted September 17 Posted September 17 How can i recrystallize potassium nitrate in order to make a higher quality gunpowder for homemade projects, if someone can answer or send a link to a video showing how it would be much appreciated!
Arthur Posted September 17 Posted September 17 Put the word Recrystallisation into youtube! It's explained thoroughly by several people, maybe in several languages if that helps. HOWEVER it's extremely rare to find a product for sale that isn't pure enough for pyro purposes now in modern times. What causes you to believe that your nitrate is impure? Remember that every time you recrystalise something a small amount of the wanted product escapes with the rubbish. Find a good source of the usual chemicals in your area.

I made a recristallization time ago but you would have Better result controlling the quality of sulfur, well if you make some kind of glitter you Will have some benefit that you can see but for BP none of Substantial
MadMat Posted October 30 Posted October 30 (edited) I know this is an old thread, but there is something that really needs to be said. The single biggest factor that controls how fast your BP burns is the charcoal! I know of people that made their own potassium nitrate by peeing in a pile of dirt/hay and letting it sit for a couple months. Without any major purification procedures, this "pee" nitrate worked just fine for BP. So, unless you know for sure that your potassium nitrate is garbage, why bother going through the hassle of doing a recrystallization? First confirm that your charcoal is made from a good wood source and is cooked properly. Next I would check out the milling process you are using, along with your procedure for granulating. Did you ball mill it long enough? In fact, did you actually use a ball mill? I know there is all sorts of information out there for making BP with out a ball mill, but I, personally, don't have much faith in them. If everything else checks out next I would think about the sulfur. Is it acidic?? Even acidic sulfur can make decent BP as long as there isn't way too much acid. The biggest problem with acidic sulfur is incompatibility in other compositions. Certain compositions can be downright dangerous with acidic sulfur. Edited October 30 by MadMat
