50AE Posted April 15, 2008 Posted April 15, 2008 Today I got lucky ! I did something terrible. I wanted to grind up some magnalium with my mortar and pestle, to make it burn faster. So I saw a plastic cup with 3 grams gray stuff, I thought it's magnalium I used before, but I also thought it can be flash powder. But it was dark gray and my flash is light gray, so I trusted myself and started to grind a little. I grinded very strongly and I said to myself that if it didn't ignite, it's not flash powder. So I continued. After 5 minutes, I obtained fine stuff. First I wanted to test the "fine magnalium" mixing with KClO4 to make flash. I mixed diapering on a small paper 1 gram and I went to the bathroom to test 0.2g, thinking it will be very scary and powerful. No, it burned like a sparkler. I said "WTF" ?!. There's something wrong. How can grinded magnalium in flash burn slower ? I mixed again 1g. I tested it - same result Finally, I thought of taking the rest 2 grams of magnalium and burn them in the open air. I put a hot burning fuse and I lit it.. UNEXPECTED - FSSSSsss ... PAF = flash I was not going to believe it... 5 minutes I've grinded flash powder hardly without ignition, that's a luck !I realised what I've done and I won't do this mistake again. Next time I won't trust my eyes so easily and label my cups.
WarezWally Posted April 15, 2008 Posted April 15, 2008 Just hypothetically here, if you successfully ballmilled flash would its reaction rate be any faster?
Mumbles Posted April 15, 2008 Posted April 15, 2008 Just hypothetically here, if you successfully ballmilled flash would its reaction rate be any faster?WarezWally, that kind of stupidity, even coming from you, is mighty impressive. Hypothetically or not, if you say anything that dumb ever again, you're banned for life. Anyone that even entertains the idea of trying to continue that conversation, in any way shape or form is getting warnings as well. As far as you go 50AE, that kind of carelessness is what causes very serious accidents. I highly suggest you get out of flash powder, which seems to me a primary interest of you. I have whole heartedly say, and I am sure most will agree, you are definitely not responsible enough or ready to be using it. Consider this a fair warning, if you keep up discussion of flash you're also inching closer to a ban, though at least a temporary one.
50AE Posted April 15, 2008 Posted April 15, 2008 Please don't think flash is the primary interest for me, it isn't. I'm not a k3wl guy who's making only flash and thinking only of flash. For responsability, I did a mistake yes. But I don't ignore it and I learn from it. Everyone makes mistakes. I respect these compositions and I don't do stupid things with them, so I think I can at least try them. I'll say again, I'm not a flash powder maniac. It's just one of my favourite compositions, mainly because of the light. This happening was just like putting wrong chemical, instead of the right one. For example, It's like using salt instead of sugar, because you don't have description of the chemicals.

I feel that thats a genuine question, yes we all know that ballmilling flash is a bad idea but whats wrong with asking a hypothetical question? I don't see the stupidity in asking a question.

I don't see the stupidity in asking a question.Even though it is hypothetical it is still super simple to figure out. Finer particles, better mixed, burn faster. Green mix made with granular chems burns slow. Green mix made with very, very, fine chems burns faster and the same greenmix ball milled burns even faster. Its how it works. Finer particles burns faster. End of story.
WarezWally Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 Still doesnt satisfy my curiosity, seeing as I am not allowed to responsibly talk about it here I guess I'll take it to some k3wl forum and hope for the best.
Mumbles Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 Fine, go ahead. They'd probably even ban you for asking stupid shit like that. And if not, I'm sure you'll fit right it.
JCrewPyros Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 Is it me or are the Passfire forum's a pain in the rear... I have noticed while trying to read past post that hitting next will take you to the last post made... IE another post... not the reply to the topic I was reading...
WarezWally Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 Fine, go ahead. They'd probably even ban you for asking stupid shit like that. And if not, I'm sure you'll fit right it. My my, never expected that from you. It seems my little conundrum has gotten to you
Mumbles Posted April 17, 2008 Posted April 17, 2008 Mostly you just downgraded my already rather unflattering opinion of you.
oskarchem Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 "Where is this venting room" *Scrolling down the page* "Ah here it is". Anyway, a rather uncharming day at school, well let's say that it's not entirly my fault but anyway: There are very tall alder tree's just outside the Frenchclass window, so let's say I was dreaming about getting home and making some rockets. and then she tells me to stop dreaming and get back to work, this fault is 100% mine but still... Then comes English class, each time this is just a big laugh, my friends somtimes try to say somthing in english but can't get the pronounciation well, so let's say I laugh a bit, of course I'm not trying to mok them, wich would not be fair since when I first spoke French, I wasn't any better, but sometimes it's really funny, so my teacher for the first time achtually started shouting at me, for I think an unfair reason, I mean she eaven laughed when one of my friends pronounced a word wrong. Now comes the very charming spanish class, since I have some kind of talent for langauges I'm not so bad in Spanish, so anyway, I had finished a exercise before evryone else, so the teacher tsaid that I occupy myself, so I got out a peice of paper and started doing calculations for flying.. And then comes another exercise and so I also finish it before the rest, so I get out the same peice, and finish some calculations, and then she decides to grab the paper from me and write on my report that I don't listen to her class because I'm doing maths, and she clearlly knows that it was something else, because I told her... she's getting reall bitchy at this moment. And now just to accomplish my day, my GF sends me a sms, telling me that it seems to her that I'm just playing with her, wich I am not... Gotta go and fire a rocket...
FrankRizzo Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 And now just to accomplish my day, my GF sends me a sms, telling me that it seems to her that I'm just playing with her, wich I am not... Gotta go and fire a rocket... Dude, it only gets worse until they get to be ~25 years old. Under that age, unless occupied by a project, most women need something (drama) to occupy their brain. The fact that most of 'em have such low self image that they constantly need to be reminded of their status with you doesn't help either. Be a man, set her straight, and tell her what you really think of her. If you *are* fucking with her, have some respect for a fellow human being and don't be a douche. Good luck man.
oskarchem Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 Yeah, did that.. I surly aren't fucking with her... Now let's concentrate about my *friend* that I want's to have a go at her .. I shall set him very straight (I won't use any force untill there is no other choise).. Going to make a rocket..
BLAST420 Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 MAN YOU KNOW WHAT IM READY TOO VENT!!! I live in a state where they dont allow you to shoot a damn botle rocket....hell you cant even blast a damn firecracker....or a good ol roman candle.....O well I still manage to put shells in the sky!! Hell who doesnt enjoy the sight of that youd have to be a real soar thumb!!
jacob Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 Alot of states don't allow bottle rockets, they have a bad habit of shooting up under the shingles on houses and catching them on fire.
Brakkie Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 And ofcourse it's computerday today. My computer literally crashed on me so now I'm just trying to get it working. I'm just glad I was able to save my important files and notes that I've kept on a seperate disk or else I would've lost everything Ah well it's back to the computer before doing more pyro. There's only 1 positive side about this story, hearing the ballmill running while working
TheSidewinder Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 I have yet to hear a documented case of an ordinary bottle rocket starting a fire in the shingles on a clean roof. It would take a lot longer "burn time" than a bottle rocket could possibly create, to start a shingle ITSELF on fire. Now, a roof whose gutters or low/flat spots are filled with very dry leaves? Certainly possible it if landed on them while still burning/glowing, and the leaves were allowed to burn long enough. But not a clean roof. So here's my vent, just an observation and certainly NOT proof to the contrary, but more a caution about believing what the media advances to fulfill their putrid agenda:I wish I could remember now where I saw it, but there was some video floating around, trumpeted by the anti-fireworks Nannys as "proof" that bottle rockets could start fires on roofs. The video showed a still-burning rocket landing on what was an almost clean section of the roof. Then the camera cut away to some blathering anti-fireworks activist, then stopped. When the camera was restarted, pointed at the roof, the first obvious thing I noticed was that it was aimed at a different section of the roof than where they first showed the rocket landing. Next, there were now a LOT more leaves than there had been before, at least in that area. And a pile of the leaves were burning merrily away. But the roof ITSELF wasn't burning (at least not yet), it was just the leaves burning. Of course, they then pointed the camera at some air-headed "journalist" who was cheerfully excreting the usual propaganda about the "dangers" of fireworks. Careful examination of the video pointed to the fire having been started by someone climbing up a ladder, adding leaves, then manually lighting them on fire, and perhaps "boosting" it with something. That the media was a willing party to this farce didn't surprise me in the least.
jacob Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 Woops, I wrote that too fast, leme correct myself.I heard a RUMOR that bottle rockets light house fires, I have no proof. And I can't stand the media either, I may have posted this before but it's worth showing again. Fireworks safety video. It's down the page a bit.
tentacles Posted June 6, 2008 Posted June 6, 2008 Now there is a GREAT one to submit to mythbusters! I'm going to register over there now. EDIT: I posted it, was going to edit it for a better explanation but their site over there is fail. We need some posts in support of the idea... Bueller?
BLAST420 Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 well all is well I was sitting at home and the doorbell rings, it was the mail man!! with one of my packages it was the one containing my ball mill! ( which I ordered from pyrocreations) well I couldnt wait to rip it open and all was well http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h73/breimer06/DSC00258.jpg I plugged my mill in and turned it on it was very quiet which was great. I put my lead media that I bought with it in the container and placed it on there just to find that after about 3-4 sec it wouldnt turn. I investagated and found that the pully that isnt connected directly to the motor wasnt turning!!! so the belt is TOO LOOSE remind you this is brand new with just the container and media in it!!! http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h73/breimer06/DSC00259.jpg http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h73/breimer06/DSC00260.jpg Then I noticed you can adjust the tension by sliding the motor on the side of it with 4 bolts. But when I make the tension tight, the fan blade on the inside connected to the motor hits the wall!!! I am stumped and frustrated!! I guess a bit smaller belt would fix my problem but this should work brand new! I even ordered a spare!! Any suggestions? NOT GOOD!! off to email pyrocreations uhhhhh
justanotherpyro Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 Try to find a fanbelt that goes on a small engine. They are better quality anyways than the ones that come stock with those 3lb ball mills.
ULTRABUF Posted June 14, 2008 Posted June 14, 2008 There was a huge storm last night and we didnt have power until like 5:00 today. I woke up at 11:30 and was like whats going on? I talked to my parents, they said the power was out and that I didnt have to work out in the shop today. The downside is that we didnt have any water so I couldnt any pyro, so I went back to sleep till like 3:00. Now we have water and power again so I've been able to do some stuff. Life without electricity blows.
BLAST420 Posted June 14, 2008 Posted June 14, 2008 Well as you know if you were reading the happiness thread hours ago that the first batch of black powder was under way and the mill was a turnin!!! Well some rain decided to start soo yea here we are two hours into milling and I had to pull it and bring it in! can i just start millin some more tommoroww?
oskarchem Posted June 14, 2008 Posted June 14, 2008 You can mill whenever you want, unless some water got into the electrical parts, then, you should wait a couple of days, to be sure that you don't start a fire.. BTW: If you have got one of those 3lbs ball mills with the media that came with, you would have to probably mill ofr 24-48h, unless you have some extra reactive charcoal.
