optimus Posted September 27, 2006 Posted September 27, 2006 Anyone in the UK wanna recommend me a good UNI to apply for chemistry in? Try these guys http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/fac/sci/chemistry/ My bro went there and highly recommends it.
shadopyro Posted September 28, 2006 Posted September 28, 2006 Lol! a rather good coincidence that ive just gone to visit warwick university's open day. i went for the tour of the chemistry department- and i must say that i was pretty impressed, quite a few NMR machines and one hellovallotta fume cupboards. And for my vent, FFS i was scared shitless yesterday! the cops were on my street talking to people and i thought they mightve been asking about me. It turned out that they were asking about some stupid retarded kids driving at 70mph down our street and crashing into my friends wall (this is now the 2nd time some ones demolished her wall by crashing into it! lol!).
Pretty green flame Posted September 28, 2006 Author Posted September 28, 2006 This may be a bit offtopic right now but anyway. Well i'm pretty pissed right now. I have seen footage of seals being killed and it's really disturbing, those people who do this are fucking sick!!! And i damn all those who torture/kill innocent animals for a few extra bucks, F*** you.

Haha - cool! Great minds think alike : ) My bro did give me a little unofficial tour of the labs there, and I must say I was impressed! Good luck with your degree, wherever you end up! And now for a quick vent: I live behind an alley way that leads from the frontage of a Threshers booze outlet. It's becoming a regular occurance seeing chav scumbags running across the courtward carrying crates of beer (stolen of course!) It happened this evening again, and I'm really starting to consider setting up a trip wire to floor the fuckers. Mabye with a nice blank shotgun round on the end to scare this shit outta the degererates : ) I fucking hate chavs - they make selective mass genocide seem like a worryingly good idea. Aahh... much better...
Chemguy Posted September 28, 2006 Posted September 28, 2006 lol, good idea:). My grandpa aimed a rifle at some guy trying to rob a country dairy, which was the only dairy for miles. It wasn't loaded of course but it scared away the robber.
itwasntme Posted October 1, 2006 Posted October 1, 2006 I just saw an episode of mythbusters on youtube, the ming dynasty astronaut one. They don't know shit about making a BP rocket! I think they were trying to make 6lb rockets(1.5-1.75 inch ID). They first couldn't make a fucking good powder that burned well at all, then, they just packed it down using somekind of stick with a circle on the end and a broom stick later!!!!They wondered why it exploded. Don't they fucking use google on their myths? Then, they used commercial Goex with some tar and just packed that down with a broom stick! I think I've lost respect for them, they seem like a bunch of kewls. They once used 850 lbs of high explosives to get cement out of a cement truck! (btw, anyone know what that might have been?) Then they used 5 lbs of BP to shoot off a "tree cannon". They're taking some saftey measures so they're just having fun with some booms I guess. I just hate people that make "bombs" for fun, it's retarded(like ozzy using dowel endcaps for salutes and making flash in mass quanitys.)
_DB_ Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 I really want to think that they used ANFO for the cement truck explosion. The bag labels were censored out, but I have seen similar bags that contained ANFO.
joe609 Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 Nothing wrong with a good explosion every now and again providing the right safety precautions are taken, albeit fiireworks are more interesting in my opinion as for mythbusters they may not no shit but you got to admit it's entertaining.

Explosions are pretty entertaining, but they're all the same mostly. Fireworks are a lot more fun than an M-80. Don't you think that they could have reasearched it a little more and found out that they need to press or ram it with considerable force?
maximusg Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 There is a beauty in the art of pyrotechnics. And there is an equal beauty in the chemistry of HE. I have deep admiration for both.
joe609 Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 'Itwasntme' I agree completely with what you're saying, i havnt seen the episode but maybe it was part of the myth that they had to use the broomstick to compact it rather than a press? usually on that show they kind of slap everything together without proper prior planning anyway.
optimus Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 Read THIS. Apparently some people who actually knew what they were doing made the motors, and helped "develop the ancient chinese formulas"
itwasntme Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 Lol, yeah, I knew there had to be someone with some idea of how to make a rocket motor. At least people here have the same interests as me. Before I came to this site, I was into making salutes and breaking stuff with hammers and now, I love rockets making stars and some good rocket fuel(green mix).

If you listen to the opening credits it says that they have 30 years experience in special effects, which doesn't mean that they are pros at pyro tecnics, that's why they often call in qualified pyrotechnicians for most of that sort of stuff.
Chemguy Posted October 8, 2006 Posted October 8, 2006 Listen to this. There was an egg on rotten eggs that states that the substance left after burning a mixture of sugar and KNO3 is sulfur! It goes on to explain that that is the reason that a mixture of C6H12O6 and KNO3 smells so bad. What's more, this egg at some point made the top ten, and everyone thought it was true. Potassium oxide is the product, which is why the burnt stuff absorbs water when you leave it exposed to air.

Lol!! I saw that same egg. Do you have the link to it, that one made my day a while ago. I always thought kno3 and sugar smelled good
Swany Posted October 8, 2006 Posted October 8, 2006 At the risk of being boring, it would actually probably be potassium carbonate as the main decomposition product. Perhaps even some potassium cyanide, nitrite, nitride, hydroxide, oxide or whatever else is around as well. A plethora of products form when combustion reactions occur.
Chemguy Posted October 9, 2006 Posted October 9, 2006 Here is the link. Rotten eggs sulfur I never get tired of these things. By the way, the main decomposition products is extremely hydroscopic, and basic and it feels slippery like KOH, so either it's K2O or KOH.
Mumbles Posted October 9, 2006 Posted October 9, 2006 Or potassium carbonate, which BTW is the main decomposition product.
Chemguy Posted October 9, 2006 Posted October 9, 2006 I have got potassium carbonate, it doesn't feel slippery, and it doesn't absorb water, atleast nothing like KOH. K2CO3 may be the main decomposition products now that I think about it, but there is still a fair amount of KOH.
Mumbles Posted October 9, 2006 Posted October 9, 2006 Have you ever wet it, and rubed between your fingers? Definatly slipery, though not as much so as KOH. It is a detergent afterall. Sodium Carbonate has the same feel. I'm not saying it is the only decomp product, but it is one of the main ones. Perhaps it doesn't absorb all the water, but the smaller amounts of KOH, and god knows what else willl.
Chemguy Posted October 9, 2006 Posted October 9, 2006 I wet it, and it was slightly slippery, but like you said, not quite like KOH. And like swany said there are tonnes of by products that would absorb water in this mixture aswell. Anyway, has anyone here been to pyrowiki, it's like a wikipedia for flash powders and gunpowders, it's not that big yet, I am the 60th member, but we could all add a lot to it I think.
Pyrohawk Posted October 13, 2006 Posted October 13, 2006 Ok, my vent is that my beloved Ball Mill and Star Roller died on me! After the two years I've had it I have made a lot of BP and a lot of stars in that old thing..... Now the motor is locked up and won't budge. Wow....so no stars or BP for me for a while.... Man that sucks... I will get a new one as soon as I can but there is no Harbor Freight near here so it may be a while.
Chemguy Posted October 13, 2006 Posted October 13, 2006 I know how you feel, it's so annoying when something you have relied on stops working, especially after two years. You could try getting it fixed.
itwasntme Posted October 22, 2006 Posted October 22, 2006 Look at this egg on rotteneggs(doesn't deserve to be capitalized)http://www.rotteneggs.com/r3/show/se/200792.htmlThats not a ball mill. Look at what the person at the bottem said NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!1. Good "gun powder" takes at least 4 hours to be anygood unless you want to spend 4 hours driving really slow I suggest you buy one for $30! The gas would be well over than unless you have a compact car.2. If you’re going over 10 MPH the media(lead balls or mables not reccomended!) will not crush the black powder and just spin with the can so that is a waste3. Using marbles is a bad idea as they are made of glass and the glass from them will get in to the black powder and sensitize it, not good!4. Wouldn’t people see something stuck on your tire? What if the cops pull you over? "officer I was just using it as a ball mill to make black powder for my KeWl B0mZ!5. Finally I doubt that you ever tried this. Go to fucking walmart and buy a rock tumbler, finsihed! This really is a shitty egg.I completly agree with him as I know him from another forum and showed him the site and he LOVES to insult the kewls. I used to do it but it got boring after a while. This sickens me how could someone be dumb enough to drive with something as big as a paint can on their tire and call it a ball mill!?!?!?!?!?!? I think someone here should join and insult that dumbass even more.
