viziers Posted June 9, 2007 Posted June 9, 2007 Mumbles, If this is inapropiate (sp) sorry.. I need to know if i can get away with not using tissue paper between the burst charge and starsand if you can mix the two stars in the same 1/2 hemi. The star formulas are as follows McLains Keystone organic Pot. PercRed GumStront. Carb.Char. air floatDextrin Shimizu Blue star organic Pot. Perc.Red GumCupric oxideParlonDextrin My burst charge is home made (corn cob) Pot. Nitrate SULFERCharcoal Now i know the rule about Pot. Perc and Sulfer not mixing but wordering if this is more for the Pot. Chlorates. But if the burst charge is just resting on the stars is that going to be a big problem and what are the risks and can the finished shell with stars and burst charge be stored for say 4 weeks until use? Thanks Jeff
jacob Posted June 9, 2007 Posted June 9, 2007 Pot. Perc and Sulfer can mix and still be just fine, however Chlorates and sulfer = death, i'm not sure how, but it becomes super sensitive and is prone to spontaneous combustion. the only problem i see with not using tissue paper is the stars might mix with the burst so much it might hurt the symmetry of the brake, but thats a darn big might. also i would just use riced meal in a shell that small, not bp coted corn cob, just my 0.02.
itwasntme Posted June 9, 2007 Posted June 9, 2007 Chlorate and sulfur isnt death. You can mix them, most of the time, it wont go off, but that 1 time, it just might. I would just seperate the burst from the stars with tissue paper, and thats the proper way to make most shells. I dont, because I make tiny shells, like 3/4 inch cupsets. I just use BP and microstars.
viziers Posted June 9, 2007 Author Posted June 9, 2007 Well the shells im making are 3" and 4" shells i just had a concern with the Pot. perchlorate and sulfer having a bad reaction.
asilentbob Posted June 9, 2007 Posted June 9, 2007 Perchlorate fueled stars are generally primed with BP for reliability anyways... then you would just be dealing with BP primed stars touching BP coated filler material... Generally the tissue paper / rice paper is used to separate the stars from the filler so that they don't mix over time from slight vibrations and throw off the perfectly arranged pattern.
deadman Posted June 10, 2007 Posted June 10, 2007 When he said "same 1/2 hemi", he was talking about the same half of the shell. It was just a miswording. I haven't had a problem with perchlorate based stars and BP resting underneath them with no barrier in a mine bag for weeks.

Thank you Deadman for clearing that up for me and sorry Jacob for the miscommunication on my part. It is also good to know because im in the midst of making a 6" spherical shell with 3/4"Red and Blue Crossets. As far as the stars shifting around in not too worried because i pack the shells tightly with burst charge and i usually can hear any rattling around in the shell when its sealed up.

Thank you asilentbob thats what i thought in most cases with the tissue/rice paper
