Arthur Posted May 21 Posted May 21 Hexachloro benzene is (was) a chlorine donor in use til it's toxicity was determined to be unacceptably high. typically a perchlorate oxidiser in the comp would produce adequate chloro in the flame to be a chlorine donor.
Zumber Posted May 22 Posted May 22 For colour strobe stars it works well yeah it is highly toxic. For colour stars parlon, saran can be useful in place of HCB.

Ammonium perchlorate cannot replace HCB without altering the oxygen balance in the formula way too much. Potassium perchlorate is not a chlorine donor so I do not see how that could work? There are some brominated compounds that could be a drop in replacement for HCB but they are as bad for health and environment too. Polyvinylidene resin, or actually its co-polymer with polyvinyl chloride that was called Saran resin, has been tried but it is not the same since it has a bigger fuel value. HCB was unique and is more or less impossible to replace without re-formulation.

sachinagg Posted May 22 Posted May 22 He wants HCB (chlorine donor )substitute not chlorine donor. 1st -HCB is ban item or not available easily. he wants to make green strobe or glitter stars(Bleser). If I am right, Ba. Nit-53, Mgal-12, S-17, HCB-13, Dextrin-5. So he wants this. His green strobe post he mention hcb in composition. Plz I am wrong Ignore it. Thanks
Zumber Posted May 22 Posted May 22 He hasn't mentioned particularly as always he does, For colour strobe stars HCB cant be substituted that easily.

Only in compositions where something scavenges the potassium, like sulfur, otherwise the chlorine will be bound hard in KCl and not be available to form the excited monochlorides of barium, copper or strontium.
