Hello fellow Pyros!

My name is Tim. I've been shooting fireworks for a very long time... I am ready to take some things to the next level... I'll tell you up front that I'm a complete rookie and I'm looking to learn, starting with very safe and simple solutions at first...

Hoping a lot of you can help me get started and kind of lead me in the right direction for beginners and keep me from hurting myself or others down the road... Anyhow, lot's of good information here and thanks for helping us all keep pyrotechnics alive and well!

A couple goals for me in the next few years!

Goal 1. Join a good club like the BPG which is only 30 minutes from me in Indiana this year.

Goal 2. Obtain my Type 54 license, and obtain contingency storage.

Goal 3. Take some good fireworks building / manufacturing courses most likely at the PGI convention this year

Goal 4. Learn from exceptional sources about chemistry do's and don't in pyrotechnics.

Goal 5. Transform raw materials into good use for my hobby, shoot and store in the future until ignition time.

Look forward to chatting with all of you!

-Tim

' Lo All,

I'm Thomas and have been into amateur pyrotechnics since age 5 when my da took us all up to his cousin's Thunderbay Ontario Canada cottage, (where fireworks were legal for private individuals to purchase AND use) and let us loose in the fireworks store with our allowances plus about $20 each supplementally. (he did manage to keep the biggest mortars off-limits for about another decade).

My tinnitus and high frequency hearing loss date back to those fateful days, so (in a nod to my primary career as a health care professional) let's remember to wear our hearing protection while making things go boom.

We live out in the woods below the big lakes, so our usual booms don't get noticed much, and if they do, people tend to write it off to blasting at one of the several gravel quarries that dot the surrounding countryside.

My da was a blaster in a quarry for a long while, and while his ears aren't very good, he still has all his digits, so the safety rules he learned, used, and taught me seem to have worked pretty effectively so far (except for the hearing thing :-) ).

Well, too much about me already, so I'll be here, reading, lurking, and asking an occasional question around this most excellent forum/pyro resource!

Thanks for having me,

Thomas

Hello,

Matt Here. I am a high power rocketeer from Apex, NC. I have recently started to work with igniters, and found this forum as I was searching. I launch high power rockets (currently my record is an I motor, but I am planning a J in the near future). I am still relatively new to pyrotechnics, so I figured I would throw a post out on here.

Matt

Hello,

My name is Bobby. Fireworks have been an interest of mine since childhood. Now that I have my own children, this interest has been rekindled. I am a member of MoPyro and have just joined PGI. I have been trying my hand at making 3 inch shells and have just completed a few timed report rocket headers. I have been lurking for quite some time and thought I should formally join.

Hello, I am a backyard pyro that has always wanted to take it to the next level. I have begun to build small shells and choreograph my shows with a firing system. I am looking to learn and grow as a safe and responsible pyro.

Hi, All. As you might notice from my sign up date, I have been lurking for quite a while, now. I'm afraid I fall into the cracks, as far as what kind of pyro I am, so - help me out! Actually, I am a thumper. I load my own for my 37mm flare launchers (hence the handle) and therefore, have some um, unique problems. I have learned a LOT about loading shells for thumpers, but I needs must follow some rules most of ya'll need not worry about; I do NOT have a destructive device permit, so charge weights and burst charges must be monitored closely. Also, I am currently studying the ins and outs of illumination rounds, and trying to figure out what I can do there, but launching a flash type powder makes me nervous :( as my launcher are fairly shock - isn in nature. So, pardon me if I am hesitant to try some mixtures. Anyhow, thanks for allowing me this opportunity to learn!

Hello,

My name is Richard and I want to get into making my own black powder. I have several muzzle loaders and shoot at a local club that is for black powder guns only. Lately the black powder is getting hard for us to get . Walmart only sells it when its hunting season and has none at this time of the year where I live.

I want to build a ball mill and need advice on doing that . I have a old pool motor that turn 3450 rpm that I would like to use but not sure it can be slowed down using pulleys. I have looked at the charts but don't really know what I am looking at. Can this motor be slowed enough for a ball mill and what size pulleys would it take. ? Thanks for any help , I am clueless on this type thing.

One of the best resources for the amateur to make BP and a ball mill is the book "Ball Milling Theory and Practice for the Amateur Pyrotechnician" by Lloyd Sponenburgh. He discusses everything from the mill construction to making the powder.

Hi,

I am from Australia. Fireworksis are illegal here, except for registered companies.

Individuals who make, use or buy anything pyrotechnic here are treated as terrorists by the authorities
