SharkWhisperer Posted July 12, 2023 Posted July 12, 2023 Well, uhh...ummm.... SAM_9041.JPGhahahahaha! What kinda sticks you baking there, RT?
Richtee Posted July 12, 2023 Author Posted July 12, 2023 Willow. Came out real purty, too. Shiny black. Went to the Good Will store and got a blender. Damn...shoulda done that years ago. Still not a CLEAN process, but it’s alot faster. And SOMEWHAT cleaner.

Still not a CLEAN process, but it’s alot faster. And SOMEWHAT cleaner.Nice. Willow's still my fave. Like it better than the commercial Paulownia coal circulating last year and prior. Coal from a downed weeping willow tree seemed notably faster than pauly. But it could just be those particular batches. Gotta not cook all the volatiles out of it. Not an arborist so wouldn't know black willow (or many others) if it fell on me. But weeping willow made smokin hot BP that eclipsed Goex (not hard to do...).
Arthur Posted July 12, 2023 Posted July 12, 2023 The process aim for commercial powder is not for the fastest powder but for a reliable and consistent powder that's fast enough. Pro BP should be +/- 2% from batch to batch for ever, DIY may be +/- 50% batch by batch.

And if you have a large supply of very nice/hot charcoal, you can pretty reliably make super-hot BP for quite a long time. Also important to mention that for use in firearms, some cartridges use maximum loads of BP without approaching their chamber/barrel pressure capacities, so you can squeeze extra performance out of a gun using super-hot 'faster-than-commercial) homemade (you can't load any more commercial BP into an already-stuffed cartridge). Once you get near the energies and speeds of commercial BP, which itself is pretty darned good-quality, you can be pretty assured that you have mastered making BP. Beyond that, faster is just for fun. p.s. Is the UK heating up outside like the south of the continent over there, or are you still in the comfort zone? Edited July 12, 2023 by SharkWhisperer
