Ti-Al

An old timer send me a grainy video and star formula that included Ti-Al (formula called for 40M-100M). He said he got it a long time ago but none of the usual pyro suppliers have it these days.

Has anyone made their own by mixing Ti and Al? In what proportions? They guy says his is an alloy and not really a mixture.

I saw TiAl for sale on some industrial sites but likely in quantities far greater than I would ever need or want.

Thanks.

I've seen loads of GR5 on ebay -thats Ti, Al and V alloy. BUT of course this is in bar, rod and sheet form.

Sadly many pyro ingredients are waste products from another industry. I remember reading that one historic French pyro had so stop making a product when the local ironworks had finished a particular job and that grade of iron shavings would never be available again. Can you guess or determine where your friend worked? Possibly it was a waste product from there.

Ti and Al alloy cant be made by simply mixing Ti and Al together....properties of Ti and Al are different..TiAl contajns properties of both Ti and Al ....so it is needed to be molted and then form an alloy....It needs Industrial techniques.

Titanium and Aluminium is a popular alloy at the high end of hot machine parts, and commands a high price. No doubt you could buy some from ebay or the like in your country. Then you have the issue of making it the particle size and shape that you want. Sadly the days of walking out of your workplace with a few pounds of expensive metal -even as swarf- are long gone, it's all recycled carefully.

Find an ebay (etc) supplier in your country who supplied cut stock of your chosen alloy and contact them to buy any machining waste that they have.

What kind of formula was it used in and what effect did it produce?

If the titanium used for creating the alloy is sodium free (which is often not the case!) I guess it could be of interest to explore.

At the same time, I predict it to be something very similar to titanium when used as spark inducing material but for sure I would like to see how it behaves in glitter type of compositions.

@Crazy sorry I missed this post...He called it a Ti-Al streamer, comp below

Pot Nit 45
Char AF 29
Sulf 6
Ti-Al 40-100m 10
PVB 5
The video was a very pixelated cell phone video, but the comp was made into microstars that burned bright white with a delicate trail and aura. I really liked it and want to try it out, but Ti-Al I have not found yet.
