Arthur Posted November 19, 2021 Posted November 19, 2021 Has anyone ever tried, or heard of someone trying, to make charcoal in an electrically heated tin can? There used to be a supply of charcoal in the UK from someone who made artists drawing charcoal in a electric kiln. I was thinking about putting a 2KW electric element inside a large metal cooking pot with lid.
SeaMonkey Posted November 19, 2021 Posted November 19, 2021 I have and I also think it's a great idea. Particularly if it includes some sort of Temperature Control or Thermostat. There are many advantages to making Charcoal or Torrefied Wood at various temperatures. I'm thinking about putting together the same sort of device.
Arthur Posted November 19, 2021 Author Posted November 19, 2021 Given a few thermocouples, what sort of temperature has anyone else used to good effect? (F or C but say which!)
itwasntme Posted November 20, 2021 Posted November 20, 2021 I've used a standard US hot plate to successfully produce charcoal. Not sure wattage but 1000w perhaps? It wasn't too much wood, the can was a 4 inch diameter cookie tin and I simply filled it.
