Steigede Posted July 9, 2021 Posted July 9, 2021 I apologize if this has been asked, I didn't find anything when I did a search. Can Red Gum be substituted for Gum Arabic? Are they similar? I'm looking to make these sizzler sparklers. If Red Gum is unacceptable are there other substitutes? Or do I just need to buy some Gum Arabic? https://www.skylighter.com/blogs/how-to-make-fireworks/silver-sparklers
stix Posted July 9, 2021 Posted July 9, 2021 Hi Steigede. I think that although Red Gum is a binder, it's used more as a fuel. Gum Arabic is more of a binder. So the results may be very different.Probably useless info. But I'm sure that someone will have more useful info than I do. Cheers.
Siegmund Posted July 9, 2021 Posted July 9, 2021 They are similar in that they are both organic fuels... As binders, the big difference is that red gum requires alcohol to dissolve it; gum arabic dissolves in water (and is used on lickable envelopes and in watercolor paint.) CMC also a water-soluble binder. One could certainly try mixing up a batch of this, substituting red gum for the binders and alcohol for the distilled water, until you get the same consistency of paste as shown in the skylighter pictures. I've never made sparklers this way myself. (But I've successfully bound any number of other comps with red gum and alcohol instead of dextrin and water in the past.)
Steigede Posted July 9, 2021 Author Posted July 9, 2021 Thank you for the responses! Is this the same Gum Arabic? The food additive? I guess I could just buy some of this off amazon, pretty cheap.https://www.amazon.com/Naturevibe-Botanicals-Arabic-Powder-1lbs/dp/B08HDCR8V1/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?dchild=1&keywords=gum+arabic&qid=1625836363&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEzTVJWM0dWRTdVN0c4JmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwOTk5ODE2MUVFVjhHMzU0N0o5SiZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwODc4ODIwMzVBRDZMOEQzQU9VVSZ3aWRnZXROYW1lPXNwX2F0ZiZhY3Rpb249Y2xpY2tSZWRpcmVjdCZkb05vdExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU=
