Alternative to virgin kraft

Is there a different paper that can be used for shells, as long as they are pasted and spiked the same. I have seen the tours of Italian shell makers shops and they were using a thick pink paper that looked like construction paper.

Someone posted a link not long ago to a Maltese? vid where they were using scrap cardstock/chipboard (like cereal boxes) I think.

With virgin paper, you can look up a ASTM standard and get it's various strengths, on the other hand, it's hard to write a technique manual that's precise that starts with 'look around and see what type of boxes you have'

Sometimes it's important to develop a style that suits the materials available.

The primary reason for using virgin kraft is that it holds up better when wet with paste. Yes, it is stronger when dry and nicer to work with as well but I don't think that makes too much difference when rolling cases.

I've made plenty of shells using recycled kraft purchased from home depot. I've even pasted shells with it. It sucks and I'll never do it again, lol, but it can be done with some care.

The maltese roll their cases using material similar to posterboard with a few turns of paper over that, typically rolled wet so they dry hard and still. This is very different from the italian method. Both work, it's just a matter of what you prefer and what materials you have on hand. The Maltese are known for using lots of recycled materials in their builds, pasting shells with old grain sacks for example.

It's worth noting that recycled kraft varies quite a bit quality depending on the percentage of recycled pulp. Some hold up reasonable well when wet, at least in my experience.
