Bourbon Posted June 19, 2020 Posted June 19, 2020 When using launch tubes for rockets, should the head rest on the edge of the tube, or should the motor be above the tube a certain distance?
davidh Posted June 20, 2020 Posted June 20, 2020 (edited) I'm kidding.Just grip the motor (in your non-dominant hand) with the stick between your fingers. Light the fuse and hold it out at arms length. Release it as it takes off.PGI safety personnel get testy when doing this. I say fuck-em. Use your non-dominant hand so you don't have to relearn how to write and wipe.Enjoy. (P.S. About this I'm not kidding, but only with rockets I've made myself. Bourbon Posted June 20, 2020 Author Posted June 20, 2020 I see I've been doing this wrong. Confidence is key here.
Jester Posted June 20, 2020 Posted June 20, 2020 Dang, no kidding on confidence... They must not get CATOs very often. I like my fingers too much to do that.
Arthur Posted June 20, 2020 Posted June 20, 2020 My Indian neighbour was launching 3" ball head rockets like that while standing in his front doorway! Answering the OP(!) use what you have and test it, If the launch tube is near the motor flame it will get damaged over time.
BetICouldMake1 Posted June 20, 2020 Posted June 20, 2020 I like to have a little gap between the tube and motor. Just makes me feel a bit better in case there is a cato, especially when using PVC launch tubes as many of us do. 1
Bourbon Posted June 21, 2020 Author Posted June 21, 2020 I like to have a little gap between the tube and motor. Just makes me feel a bit better in case there is a cato, especially when using PVC launch tubes as many of us do.I was wondering about that.. I also wasn't sure if the thrust encountering resistance from the launch tube wouldn't make flight changes. After looking all over the net I couldn't find anyone saying a "proper method" for efficient launches. Maybe it makes no difference. Just curious. I'm using a steel DIY 3 ring stand, but the black on it tells me "obstruction" even if it's not. Started to wonder if I'm doing this wrong. I've been resting motor right on the edge of the square tubing.
