klachner Posted February 5, 2020 Posted February 5, 2020 Hello, i need to make break charge, but my supplier has removed the rice hulls from his offer. If i buy them from ebay etc they are incredibly expensive, so now i am searching for alternative materials which i can coat with break charge powder.Do you have any idea what can be used instead of hulls?I only make 3" shells so i think big material isnt so good, the small rice hulls were perfect
Arthur Posted February 5, 2020 Posted February 5, 2020 Rice Krispies breakfast cereal. Supermarket own brand similar cereal tends to be smaller. 7:1 powder to carrier for small shells 2:1 for big shells (12" and 16") pro rata in between.Roll them as stars in a star roller.
OldMarine Posted February 6, 2020 Posted February 6, 2020 Puffed rice, cotton seeds even rolled oats work.
Mumbles Posted February 6, 2020 Posted February 6, 2020 Rice hulls are often available in home brewing shops if you have one close. Personally I find puffed rice and cotton seed kind of big for 3" shells. Some people use grass seed. Puffed millet might work. I've heard of people using broken up popcorn, ground cork, vermiculite, etc. as well. 3" is probably still small enough you could use just granulated bp too.
MadMat Posted February 6, 2020 Posted February 6, 2020 (edited) 3" shells aren't that big to require rice hulls. I have made a lot of 3" shells and never used anything but granulated BP for the break. I have made 4" shells with just granulated BP for that matter. 5" shells, IMHO, are the size where you start using things like rice hulls Edited February 6, 2020 by MadMat
kingkama Posted February 6, 2020 Posted February 6, 2020 I used ground cork but it was 2 mc and 70 kg of BP, i think that 1kork to 5 BP it's fairy, but also 50/50 Al/perchlorate will works fine in 1to 7 ratio.
