Arthur Posted December 8, 2019 Posted December 8, 2019 I want to make a former to make some cylinder shell cases, what size should I start with? I'm thinking that a 3" shell could be made on a 2.5" former, and a four inch shell on a 3 inch former. Does anyone care to share any wisdom please. I'm perfectly capable of finding retail items of assorted sizes, but what sizes are good please?
davidh Posted December 8, 2019 Posted December 8, 2019 a 4" shell is made on a 3-1/2" case former.5" and 6" shell also have case formers 1/2" smaller than the shell size.
Mumbles Posted December 8, 2019 Posted December 8, 2019 As you get larger than 6", typically you allow more clearance for string and paper. 7, 8, and 10" shells generally are 3/4" undersized. 12" and up usually allow an inch or more. On the smaller size, I like 1 3/4" formers for 2" shells. They require a true 2" mortar, class c sized tubes do not work. 1
