durfeedog Posted April 27, 2007 Posted April 27, 2007 Does any body know what would hapen if you put (NH4)2S04 + NAOH in a distilation setup and applied mild heat collecting the vapors in dry ice. I lost my lab gear so I can't try it..
Mumbles Posted April 27, 2007 Posted April 27, 2007 You would get liquid ammonia and sodium sulfate. Possibly a bit of solid ammonia depending on how much dry ice you have cooling it. Any particular reason you ask?
asilentbob Posted April 27, 2007 Posted April 27, 2007 Keep in mind that you would have to dry it very very very well if you intended to store it in a lecture bottle or something for later use. "The problem isn't the need for dry ice, its what happens if you run out."Some guy from RS i can't remember. I have had mild interest in doing this, but i don't have that many uses for NH3 right now.
DeAdFX Posted April 27, 2007 Posted April 27, 2007 Find an industrial fridge or refrigeration unit in a dump yard. Modify it so you can reduce the temperature to around -40C. Cool some ethanol or low melting point eutectic of water and use this as your cooling fluid. Water would be preferable as it can soak up a lot of energy in the liquid state without increasing temperature significantly.
durfeedog Posted April 28, 2007 Author Posted April 28, 2007 Tanks a lot peploe for the feedback... Now I will have a cheap way to synthesize lots of sodium amide Maybe I can make some money selling on ebay ha ha..
