itwasntme Posted April 25, 2007 Posted April 25, 2007 Ever need to test a fountain comp, burning in a pile doesnt work, because fountains use confinement, and dont feel like making a small fountain, ramming, blah blah blah? I came up with this idea, forget how I did, but it works great! You will need: Some Al foil, a fountain comp and a fuse. Cut a 1 inch by half an inch peice of Al foil. 2 centimeters by 1 centimeter, or so. Put a small amount of comp on the foil, and put a fuse in the middle. This is a bit tricky now, you have to roll it up, and close the open end off so that no powder will fall out. The size of the fuse is the nozzle size.http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m310/phillydude49/CIMG1513.jpg I have tested MANY things in these. They are impossible to make boom, and release very little smoke. I find a kno3/sulfur composition to be interesting to burn in it, 2/1 KNO3/Sulfur. It burns with a pink flame, and sounds like a blow torch, try it sometime. I have a video, but its a bit confusing. My black match makes a lot of sparks, and the comp I am using here is a charcoal/BP/Al comp. You will know when the fountain ignites, because the flame gets bigger with more sparks. http://s107.photobucket.com/albums/m310/ph...nt=CIMG1514.flv The Al foil melts, but I find it doesnt affect the composition that much, and sometimes it ignites!
Umphrey Posted April 26, 2007 Posted April 26, 2007 This is a very efficient way to test numerous fountain compositions. I've been using a variation of it for years based on Jimmy Yawn's aluminum foil bottle rockets. See here for more details: http://www.jamesyawn.com/micro/index.htm and here: http://www.jamesyawn.com/micro/dsc00239.jpg . Kudos on the tutorial.
