Newbergpyro Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 Does Anyone know of any houshold titanium products that I could file down so my BP ignitors are all Sparky!!!
DeAdFX Posted April 25, 2007 Posted April 25, 2007 Hmmm There are watches, pencils, razor blades(the kind for shaving beards) and some other household items made out of Titanium. However none of these sources are an economic form of Titanium. Its best to hunt down a source of pure Titanium powder or ingots. Because if you use a household item made of Ti you also have to pay for the labor used to make that item.
FrankRizzo Posted April 25, 2007 Posted April 25, 2007 Even if you do find a household product to cannibalize, what do you plan to file it down with?
mormanman Posted April 25, 2007 Posted April 25, 2007 Um go to like a pool cleaner guy and he should have some but its not cheap and a pool shop might have it to.
deadman Posted April 25, 2007 Posted April 25, 2007 It is probably going to be cheaper for you if you buy it powdered. You're not going to be able to file it with an ordinary file. It is titanium afterall. But I believe some golf club faces are relativley pure. Good luck.
asilentbob Posted April 25, 2007 Posted April 25, 2007 Yes sometime in electrolytic pool chlorination cells the cathode is titanium mesh and the anode is some MMO, DSA, Pt plated, etc anode. Twould be expensive. Searching along the lines of "pool salt chlorinator cell" should get some hits. I think some welding rods are Ti... or they might sell Ti rods at a place that has alot of welding supplies. Firefox-fx has a few kinds of Ti, some not so shippable. Thats all that comes to mind right now.
oriansbelt Posted April 25, 2007 Posted April 25, 2007 You're not going to be able to file it with an ordinary file. It is titanium afterall. Why do you say that? Pure titanium at its hardest isn't any harder than low carbon steel and it would be hard to find it at its hardest so a file will work fine on it. The problem wouldn't be grinding the stuff up, it would finding pure titanium. Pure metals are very rarely used in industry because they usually don't have very good properties compared to alloys of the metal. Pure copper is the only exception I can think of and that is for electrical wire. So as others have said it probably would be best to try and find it already powdered.
optimus Posted April 25, 2007 Posted April 25, 2007 I managed to get a few free random bar ends of pure Titanium (aerospace grade) when I had a Titanium ring custom made for my GF (really nice, if you ever run out of ideas for presents!). It was relatively easy to file it down to a powder with a hand file, if a little slow. I have no idea what kind of file it is but it's not special... I can't remember who the seller was right now but it was via Enay and from the US... He did have some filings and turnings but wasn't comfortable shipping them internationally. Perhaps this would be a good source of cheap Ti for you guys in the US? Just a thought...
Umphrey Posted April 25, 2007 Posted April 25, 2007 but it was via Enay and from the US I just spent 10 minutes searching for Enay Metals. I now realize you must of ment EBAY. If you could track down that seller, I'd appreciate it. Anyways I've been going to Annaco Recycling for all my metal needs:http://www.annaco.com/ . I've got 10lb lots of titanium swarf and turnings for less than 6.00 a pound. Most of it is useable as is, it just needs to be washed from any grease and the larger pieces need to be chopped up with metal shears. This has also been my source for cheap magnesium and aluminum. I've got large billets of magnesium for ~2.50 a pound, it's been perfect for making magnalium.
mormanman Posted April 27, 2007 Posted April 27, 2007 If you still want some Ti bars I can get you some I just need some money like 15 buck and I'll send you the change. I don't know how much shipping will be but the bars are like $10 2x4x1/8 inch.
jaruletzu Posted June 4, 2007 Posted June 4, 2007 in chemistry : TiO2 can be reduced with C about 3 h at 1200degree and the Ti powder is formed but higher then 1200 degree Ti is obtain in liquid form. To obtain 1200 degree for u is a bit harder then buy smme Ti bars.
