memo Posted October 11, 2018 Posted October 11, 2018 my heater for my dry box quite working right at the beginning of a 5 day rain storm. when it slower down enough not to get soaked . I went to the shop and checked the fan was running but no heat I had over 20 kilos of cut and rolled stars they were wetter than when I put the in the box. c 6 cut stars and d1 rolled stars. part of the d1 turned a silver gray, the cut stars are fine. do you thinks that the rolled stars are going to be ok I have had a fan blowing on them for a few days. they are starting to dry. they are not getting hot , but they do stink
PhoenixRising Posted October 12, 2018 Posted October 12, 2018 (edited) One would expect the cut stars to be fine since they charcoal based with no metals (chrysanthemum 6). The rolled stars, however, being d1, may have reacted. A little bit of gray is okay, that's just the aluminum showing once the charcoal dries. You need to test them to know for sure if they reacted too badly. If they are not too crumbly then make a small shell to see if they don't shatter. Edited October 12, 2018 by PhoenixRising
memo Posted October 12, 2018 Author Posted October 12, 2018 only problem is the are 3/4 stars the 1/2 seem fine. a tropical wave came in today the humidity shop up and even with the fan on the are wet again.
memo Posted October 12, 2018 Author Posted October 12, 2018 wating on a new heater to come from the states about 6 more days to go.
memo Posted October 19, 2018 Author Posted October 19, 2018 heater finally got here. the dry box has been running for 24 hours. I checked on the rolled d1 and they have turned to mush. I don't think there is any hope. what s waste of 20 kilos of comp. really a bummer right . lots of work for nothing too
memo Posted October 19, 2018 Author Posted October 19, 2018 (edited) can anything be made from this mess. could I add more al . and nitrate and turn theses in to a cut stat that will work ? any ideas. trying to save 20 kilos Edited October 19, 2018 by memo
PhoenixRising Posted October 19, 2018 Posted October 19, 2018 Wow, 20 kilos sure is a lot to be depending on a single point of failure. I would try to keep backup parts next time. Sorry this happened to you. It would be a gamble adding more aluminum and/or nitrate, perhaps it could work or perhaps not. Mixing them with a charcoal comp like c6 or c8 would likely work, and could even throw in a few percent of Titanium or Ferro-Titanium. Try mixng 30 or 40 percent into a small batch of c6 and see what happens before you make more. Gold sparks are always nice. I know you have a bunch of c6 already, perhaps use the next batch as crackle matrix or strobe matrix? Long hanging Kamuro with FerroTi?
memo Posted October 19, 2018 Author Posted October 19, 2018 I will give that a shot. do you think the glitter will still work _
PhoenixRising Posted October 19, 2018 Posted October 19, 2018 (edited) You said they turned to "complete mush" so I'd dare to say.... no? Just a guess though in lieu of testing on your part. Cracking is one thing, but complete mush... sounds like ammonium perchlorate reaction or something. It would be very hard to say a this point without knowing more or an actual test of some sort. I think using them as "filler" for charcoal comets is their only hope in life anymore if they reacted badly enough. Otherwise, just write it off at the end of the year as a loss. And dispose of them, safely. Edited October 19, 2018 by PhoenixRising
