memo Posted October 10, 2018 Posted October 10, 2018 when adding lamp black to lets say to tiger tail would you subtract the amount of charcoal you add in lamp black or is it just a add to the formula. _
Merlin Posted October 10, 2018 Posted October 10, 2018 I just added the lampblack. You don't need much. Depending on the effect your after it makes a fuller effect. I also added as all amount of course charcoal. I intend to use for spider stars. They still burn very quickly.
memo Posted October 10, 2018 Author Posted October 10, 2018 thanks merlin, going to add some feti and some ti with the lamp black
Merlin Posted October 10, 2018 Posted October 10, 2018 That ought to make a nice tail. It has quite a orange reddish tail. The star will burn out before the hang time. I have read that for spiders you need overly large stars. Eg. 1/2 to 3/4" for a 4" she'll. Made mine 3/4. The sky is the limit for experimentation!
Mumbles Posted October 12, 2018 Posted October 12, 2018 A little bit of lampblack can really make a difference. It only takes a couple parts to be noticeable. As long as you keep the amount low I wouldn't bother much with adjusting formulas. If you were going to add more on the order of 10 parts, you might want start to substituting it. I use the following formula for reference. I like that it doesn't require milling. It's a Mike Swisher formula I got from rec.pyro. I have a link, but it looks like it's been taken down for the time being. It's in pounds/parts, but I've included the percentages for reference. Mike Swisher Lampblack Spider #1KNO3 - 18 lbs (55.4%)C - 9 (27.7%)S - 3 (9.2%)Dex - 2 (6.2%)Lampblack - 0.5 (1.5%) This formula being unmilled, burns a little slower than the Degn formula that is also common. I tend to make them on the smaller side for spider shells, but they still burn plenty fast.
