D1 Glitter Fallout

Recommended Posts

I made some pumped D1 Glitter stars using screen mixed comp. Shot a few out of my PEX tube star gun and they look nice but they have all dropped a lump of slow burning slag (not sure if that's the right term). Nice glitter tail on the way up and then a sputtering lump, like a really slow strobe, to the ground. Is this a common problem for this comp?

I'm thinking maybe my KNO3 is weak or some driven in moisture? Maybe ball mill everything but the Al to get a hotter burn? I know this isn't a great glitter but it's cheap and easy so I'd like to get it to work without raining fire.

Sounds like it's still wet.

You talking about a 2 week drying time min.

Thanks guys, I'll let em keep drying then. I guess it's time for me to get to work on a drying box. I don't think a fan is gonna cut it with the average humidity here being about 78%.

Charcoal stars should burn completely when DRY, if the middle is damp it falls as a lump.

DRY is critical to stars, especially charcoal and glitter stars. It's OK to dry them for a month in a slightly warm place, and the bigger the star the longer they take to dry.

Drying boxes tend to be kind of hit or miss with glitters in my opinion. Heating them up to speed up the drying can be detrimental. I prefer good airflow personally for the bulk of the drying. If you must, finishing them off in a heated box seems to be a little less of an issue. It's still not something I overly recommend if you can help it.

How long have they been drying?

Another issue can be coarse materials. You don't necessarily need to mill everything together, but coarse materials can drastically increase the fallout. A coffee grinder may not always cut it.

I'd call D1 a real glitter. N1 is a version of it that I use for all my tremalon needs. Raw chems for cutting and BP base for pressing.

Here are some 1.25" Yankies purple wafers married to N1 with BP base. Don't mind the poor performance of the shell.
