Mumbles Posted May 3, 2017 Posted May 3, 2017 The two better suppliers that come to mind that I can recommend are Phil's General Store and Chris' Fireworks Cookbook. Both are fairly inexpensive, though shipping may be different depending on where you live. These are the two the come to mind that specifically carry technical grade vs. a lower agricultural grade at least. http://www.ihaveadotcom.com/cart/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=493https://fireworkscookbook.com/shop/potassium-nitrate-tech-grade-prill/
MadMat Posted May 3, 2017 Posted May 3, 2017 I usually get my KNO3 from Dudadiesel. If you purchase 10 lb.s it's $1.73/lb. I've never had any issues with the quality. 1
chuckufarley Posted May 4, 2017 Posted May 4, 2017 I believe Phil and fireworks cookbook have tech grade pre milled kno3.
baaroose Posted May 4, 2017 Posted May 4, 2017 (edited) Although not my preferred source, you can now get Haifa technical grade KNO3 through Skylighter: http://www.skylighter.com/mall/product-details.asp?id=2606 (My preferred sources remain Fireworks Cookbook and Phil's General Store as pointed out by others. If push comes to shove, I'd fall back to pyrochemsource.com, but understanding this is limited to greenhouse grade KNO3). Edited May 4, 2017 by baaroose
MrB Posted May 4, 2017 Posted May 4, 2017 Except it's hard as a rock. Not entierly sure what you are talking about here. It's prilled stuff, and it comes as rock hard pellets. You can mill it, or, if you want to keep wear on milling media to a minimum, dissolve it in water, and evaporate the water of again. Regular stirring while it evaporates should make sure you get fairly easy to break up crystals, which would mill faster. Over all time would be more since you first have to dissolve, and then evaporate of the water, and make sure it is bone dry...I THINK people generally just use a blade mill. I used prills for rocket candy, so i just boiled the water to dissolve it faster, and added my sugers. So i didn't have to fiddle with the prills for BP, and similar. 1
OldMarine Posted May 4, 2017 Posted May 4, 2017 I've used prilled nitrate and I just mill it by itself before milling BP. I think the charcoal cushions it because it won't mill well if you try to mill it with all 3 components at once.
MadMat Posted May 4, 2017 Posted May 4, 2017 I've got a couple old blenders purchased from a resale shop. One is for fuels (mainly charcoal), the other for oxidizers. A minute or less in the blender and the prilled nitrate free flows easily through a 40 mesh screen.
DaHaYn Posted May 5, 2017 Author Posted May 5, 2017 Thanks guys for all the input! I was thinking kelp4less but wasn't sure it was Haifa technical grade. I haven't purchased from Phils yet but so love Fireworks Cookbook
DaHaYn Posted May 5, 2017 Author Posted May 5, 2017 I usually get my KNO3 from Dudadiesel. If you purchase 10 lb.s it's $1.73/lb. I've never had any issues with the quality. Is this a member or a website?
MadMat Posted May 6, 2017 Posted May 6, 2017 Dudadiesel is a retailer that mainly sells supplies for people making their own biodiesel fuel. If anyone is interested in biodiesel, they also have a wealth of information about the subject. Their chems are pretty decent quality and the prices are very good.
chuckufarley Posted May 6, 2017 Posted May 6, 2017 I get all my sulfur, and sulfuric acid from them. They also carry the aforementioned kno3, as well as nitric acid. I agree with the good prices and great service. https://www.dudadiesel.com
