Avionics at extreme altitude

Myself and partner in crime are building a 2 - stage, min dia HP rocket that will be capable & will be reaching altitudes of 120k+

Now, data logging, staging, air start and deployment obviously need to be monitored and actuated at precisely the correct time, as even tho it's being launched at a huge event, loss or damage due to an equipment failure is simply not an option, from a labour, financial and personal aspect.

Has anyone any advice based on experience? There are many altimeters of various quality and manufacturers, but none I've researched and enquired about will work reliably past 60 - 80K. I've been explained and near come to the conclusion timers based off an accelerometer will most likely work, but most likely ain't good enough!!! I believe R-DAS systems do an excellent setup for which I know Rick Maschek is looking into for the SS2S maxishot - and I should mention Rick with an almighty thank you for coming onboard with AER group as a sponsor.

I find this forum excellent tho, and the people involved very very wise and so thought it a good place to post this troublesome queiry!!

Although I don't know of any particular compact instruments that would do it, perhaps a radar altimeter is your best bet for such altitudes.

 

I think, also, that there are GPS units that can accurately measure altitude.

GPS is a plan BUT check what cut off height and velocity is in the software. Most things beyond airliner range are unavailable on retail decoders to stop third world rocketeers getting cheap missile guidance. Maybe PCB's need to be encapsulated, it's cold up there. IIRC -70C is common.

Oh yes it's an extremely harsh environment up there!!! I just read through the entire build writeup on I think Dennis Nevilles QU8K ( quake ) rocket, reaching 110,000 ft and all the requirements to succeed with such a feat. Impressive to say the least. Especially as it used a single monster case motor, case bonded grain rated I think a Q-11000!!!
