OldMarine Posted January 26, 2017 Posted January 26, 2017 I'd been about to get a HF 1 ton arbor press to modify for pyro use but I spotted this 2 ton model on eBay that needs much less work to make it pyro friendly.http://www.ebay.com/itm/HHIP-8600-3301-Ratchet-Type-Lever-Arbor-Press-2-ton-Capacity-11-875-Work-Pack/152012025438?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D2%26asc%3D38530%26meid%3D0815644db9c940aebb56b11d6af6275b%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D351453701394 Has anyone had any experience with this brand or product?
Maserface Posted January 26, 2017 Posted January 26, 2017 I've been tempted by those, but never pulled the trigger- you should be able to get a refund if the quality sucks, go fer it!
lloyd Posted January 26, 2017 Posted January 26, 2017 Patrick, we have a couple of those down at the Santore shop. The small hand wheel will become annoying pretty quickly, and you'll likely want to put a larger wheel or a crank arm on that side with a somewhat longer moment arm. Just make sure the crank is short enough so that it doesn't strike you or the body of the press as it rotates, because it's 'hard geared' to the rack. Lloyd
OldMarine Posted January 26, 2017 Author Posted January 26, 2017 McMaster-Carr has a larger wheel in stock but I'm unsure what you mean when referring to the crank. Does the lever arm not rotate on the ratchet as the ram is advanced by the wheel? I'd assume it would spin on the return if the wheel was used to raise it.
lloyd Posted January 26, 2017 Posted January 26, 2017 The ratchet only provides downward movement (unless it has a direction toggle... some do). But the point is, if the press is healthy, the ratchet won't move when the ram is being raised -- it is ONLY raised by the hand wheel and lowered or pressed by either one. By 'crank', I mean a shop-built part, cheaper than buying a wheel, and often just bolted or clamped to the existing wheel... so no real 'modifications', just an addition. LLoyd
OldMarine Posted January 26, 2017 Author Posted January 26, 2017 Gotcha! I think I'm going to go ahead and get it. It can't be worse than a Harbor Freight (I hope).
lloyd Posted January 26, 2017 Posted January 26, 2017 There's no CHANCE it will be worse than a Horrible Fright press! Lloyd
lloyd Posted January 26, 2017 Posted January 26, 2017 Oh... an aside, but related. Change EVERY bolt in the thing with decent Grade-5 bolts. The crap they supply is almost in the annealed state! (all of them, except one American importer who does that for you before you buy -- but they're understandably more expensive.) Lloyd
OldMarine Posted January 26, 2017 Author Posted January 26, 2017 Our plumbing company has a plumbing suppyl/hardware store so I can get grade 8 at cost+10% so I'll go all out. I do like that handwheel MC has so if it'll fit I'll probably go ahead and get it. I went ahead and pulled the trigger so it should be here next Wednesday. So tired of pressing small stuff on the manual hydraulic press...
Maserface Posted January 26, 2017 Posted January 26, 2017 Be sure to give us an update when you've given it a test run ! Grats!
wildcherryxoxo Posted January 27, 2017 Posted January 27, 2017 Good point, Lloyd- 'Chineseium' fasteners arent even good for fishing weights! TOSS EM
lloyd Posted January 27, 2017 Posted January 27, 2017 Ok... Cherry... except for your obscenely-objectionable icon and your usually-negative posts... I guess you caught me off-guard by agreeing with me! I don't 'get' you. You almost never have anything positive to say about anything anyone writes, and then - unexpectedly - you do. What do you DO in pyro, Cherry? I wasn't lying when I said I do it every day for my livelihood. So why (WHY?) do you tend to contradict everything said, then 'out of nowhere' agree with something? Do you actually DO any pyro (and I don't mean "Skylighter Thermite projects")? I'm a reasonable person, and pretty knowledgeable in this trade. It's how I make my living; not merely making fireworks, but also consulting with other companies, designing products, formulae, and tooling to make it. I'd be interested in knowing something about your endeavors and/or contributions to the art. Lloyd
OldMarine Posted January 28, 2017 Author Posted January 28, 2017 Boy that company works quickly. The press has already shipped and should be here Monday.
chuckufarley Posted January 28, 2017 Posted January 28, 2017 And with free shipping? That's crazy!! Good find. I hope it works well for you
lloyd Posted January 28, 2017 Posted January 28, 2017 Oh... Patrick, I may have mislead you on one thing. In order for the hand wheel to NOT move the handle when you're moving the ram up, you must dog the release on the handle, first. Otherwise, the ratchet will resist moving the ram anywhere but further down. Lloyd
OldMarine Posted January 28, 2017 Author Posted January 28, 2017 I was wondering if it had a pawl release or not. Guess I'll find out in a few days.
OldMarine Posted February 9, 2017 Author Posted February 9, 2017 (edited) I thought something was wrong with my PTOF gauge since I couldn't get over 900 psi on the gauge with the press. I later figured out that the stock handle is too short to develop full pressure. Added a longer handle and it's now up to snuff. Edited February 9, 2017 by OldMarine
