crazyboy25 Posted April 21, 2007 Author Posted April 21, 2007 untied nuclear sells 2, 4 and 6 oz bottle of all the chemicals. united nuclear is good if you just want a little bit becasue they are expensive but high quality.
pudidotdk Posted April 21, 2007 Posted April 21, 2007 I buy the ammonium nitrate as those sports cooling pack that contains a small bag of water and some round white pellets. Go ahead and grind the round pellets and you have cheap ammonium nitrate. Ammonium chloride is the same as sal-ammoniac which is used for liquorice and such. So a place where they sell stuff for making candy is worth a visit. You'd probably have to buy zinc in a pyro supply though.
armogedon Posted April 22, 2007 Posted April 22, 2007 thanks for the help i promise not to kill myself
mormanman Posted April 25, 2007 Posted April 25, 2007 I got zinc from GNC but I don't know how pure it is though. You have to grind it to turn it into powder. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Nevermind guys
Mumbles Posted April 25, 2007 Posted April 25, 2007 Zinc from GNC won't be a powder. It will be zinc oxide, or sodium zincate or some other salt.
Xenodius Posted April 26, 2007 Posted April 26, 2007 A long time ago I tried mixing this 60/20/20, Neg-x to Sr(NO3)2 to coarse Mg, ~30 mesh. My zinc is -325 mesh. Quite frankly, it rocked. I put it in a prescription bottle, cut a 1/4 hole in the lid, filled it with 30g IIRC and then spit through the hole and stepped back. After 4-5 seconds it started smoking, then a couple seconds later burst into flame. It sprayed a jet of blue sparks into the air nearly 8 feet quickly descending, while the bottle itself burned a blinding red color, white at the core of course. Most interesting accidental combination... red, white, and blue! It was one of my favorite, memorable tests, right alongside when i tested my first flash batch and I asked a member of another forum how much he uses. He said 35 grams in an easter egg. So, I put 20g in a film canister, with ten seconds of fuse... Frankly, it sounded like a sonic boom... (2 micron Al )
mormanman Posted April 26, 2007 Posted April 26, 2007 Wow sounds like fun and kinda stupid at the same time but I can't call you stupid because I did stuff like that to only more stupid.
Xenodius Posted April 26, 2007 Posted April 26, 2007 Yeah, it is defiantly the lamest approach to a fountain I have seen. Only burned like 5 seconds cause the cap melted through in four places, venting the whole thing. But boy, five streams of sparks sure looked cool.
pudidotdk Posted July 18, 2007 Posted July 18, 2007 http://www.metacafe.com/watch/726763/negat...ire_with_water/Should be able to watch it in a few minutes. Oh dues I forgot gloves during the mixing! The mixture mixed in the video is actually not the one ignited. I set the mixture ready for igniting while searching for a water supply, when the mixture suddenly ignited. Good thing it didn't while I mixed it, it would sure leave some nasty burns!
crazyboy25 Posted July 18, 2007 Author Posted July 18, 2007 not bad i would suggest against grinding in the zinc though just an idea.
pudidotdk Posted July 18, 2007 Posted July 18, 2007 Yeah, should've gone with diapering, but I wanted it to look as easy as possible. I am doing it for the $$$ but so far it's only 2.06 score... pretty bad!
mormanman Posted July 19, 2007 Posted July 19, 2007 Can you guys tell me where to get some AN besides ice packs.
Pretty green flame Posted July 19, 2007 Posted July 19, 2007 Can you guys tell me where to get some AN besides ice packs. Fertilizer, CAN (Calcium ammonium nitrate), it contains calcium carbonate so you have to filter it out.
mormanman Posted July 19, 2007 Posted July 19, 2007 Well I know fertilizer but how do I extract the AN.
Pretty green flame Posted July 19, 2007 Posted July 19, 2007 Well I know fertilizer but how do I extract the AN. Come on man, what's the difference in solubility of AN and CaCO3. Tip: One Is soluble in water while the other isn't.
crazyboy25 Posted July 19, 2007 Author Posted July 19, 2007 isn't AN highly hygroscopic? i think even a little water destroys its effect.
psyco_1322 Posted July 19, 2007 Posted July 19, 2007 http://www.pudi.dk/video/negativex2.mov Used NH4Cl + a mom as audience. Ya just stumbled apond this vid today. Now I know I can use NaCl I will try this. Nice vid and strange accent. The english was fine. Where you from?
rocket Posted July 20, 2007 Posted July 20, 2007 isn't AN highly hygroscopic? i think even a little water destroys its effect. Yeah it is that’s why with the negative x comp you can not store it at all. Also make sure that you’re AN is nice and dry before you use it.
psyco_1322 Posted July 21, 2007 Posted July 21, 2007 Got mine dumped out of the mixing container about 1 second before it started to boil. I live in an area of high humidity. The air set it a blaze soon after mixing in the Zn. I live!
mormanman Posted July 24, 2007 Posted July 24, 2007 I found some more comps for Negative X. (I've never tried them) I found them on http://www.phreak.us/archives/The_Hacker_C...I/pyro/pyro.log RAPID OXIDATION: Four grams ammonium chloride One gram ammonium nitrate Four grams powdered zinc A finely divided metal is quickly oxidized in the presence of a strong oxidizing agent. Dry separately. Mix well. Make slight depression in center of conical pile. One or two drops of water will ignite. Stand well back as water is dropped. SPONTANEOUS FIRE: Powdered aluminum Sodium peroxide Addition of a drop of water to the sodium peroxide generates oxygen. Reaction of the gas with powdered aluminum produces aluminum oxide. The heat generated is great enough to cause the powdered aluminum to burn with such an intense flame that the flash is blinding. After the initial flare the metal continues to glow for some time. On an asbestos mat place a cone of aluminum to a height of 1/2 inch. On top of the metal place a small volume of sodium peroxide. A volume the size of a pea is sufficient. One drop of water starts the reaction. Sodium peroxide is somewhat difficult to handle. ANOTHER SPONTANEOUS FIRE: Five grams ferrous oxalate Paraffin Test tube with cork to fit. Finely divided particles of iron and carbon ignite on exposure to air. Heat ferrous oxalate in the test tube until no more fumes are given off. As the test tube is being heated, you melt paraffin in an evaporating dish. Place the cork in the melted paraffin. While the test tube is still hot, pick up the cork with a tongs. Seal the tube. On cooling, the melted paraffin will make an air-tight seal. Stand on a chair. Sprinkle the contents of the tube in the air. They catch fire in a spectacular display. Five grams lead tartrate can be used in place of ferrous oxalate. Heat the white powder in a test tube until it is black. Then seal with a cork which has been dipped in melted paraffin.FIRE WATER: Glass containing ethyl alcohol Few grams dry, red chromic anhydride The powerful oxidizing agent, chromic anhydride reacts with alcohol. Heat generated results in rapid combustion of the alcohol. On an asbestos sheet, scatter a few crystals of chromic anhydride. When alcohol strikes the chemical an immediate reaction gives rise to flames that rise a foot or more in the air. May be done in a 500 ml. flask. Will burn with a greenish glow.
Gottagotomoz Posted August 15, 2007 Posted August 15, 2007 I plan on experimenting with this sometime soon, but just how safe is it to store NH4NO3? I have roughly 185 grams of it, so im pretty sure it won't ignite or anything. I did however read large quantities have been known to randomly detonate. Just making sure. Also, is this safe to grind in a coffee grinder? And my AN seems to be a little damp due to it being so hygroscopic. Is there any way to wick out the moisture?
psyco_1322 Posted August 16, 2007 Posted August 16, 2007 NH4NO3 is is about as safe as your gonna get for storage. Its wet because it highly hygroscopic. Just spread it out on a sheet and heat it in an oven to drive off the moisture and then immediately put it into a air tight container to keep it from absorbing more water out of the air. My post above gives a good idea on how hygroscopic it is. It suck in enough moisture in a few seconds I had it out to all most instantly light the neg-x mixture. And I kept it out of the air as much as possible for that expeieriment, and it started out dry.
Gottagotomoz Posted August 16, 2007 Posted August 16, 2007 Hmm, ok thanks. So would this be safe to coffe grind or ball mill? Also, how high of a tempature should I heat it at, and for how long?
psyco_1322 Posted August 16, 2007 Posted August 16, 2007 Powdering is fine my those methods. Try about 250F untill it feels dry. It depends on how wet it is and how much you have. You can tell when its dry.
mormanman Posted August 16, 2007 Posted August 16, 2007 I'm just wandering but you know the things in the shoe boxes that say "DO NOT EAT", are the little packets of AN.
