crazyboy25 Posted April 6, 2007 Posted April 6, 2007 I realize thiere is already a post with this topic but i wanted to share some of my own info After LOTS of messing around with formulas and procedures i have found the best way to make KNO3/sugar smoke bombs. this is for people who have never made smoke bombs or just want a great effect. use a 60:40 ratio of potassium nitrate to sugar. The sugar is heated over a medium-low flame in a can with several drops of water making sure to constantly stir it and to not let it burn. Once the sugar has become pale yellow syrup take it of the flame and add the potassium nitrate. Stir and put back carefully over a low flame. Mix until the color of peanut butter. add magnisium shreds for bright white sparks WARNING: DO NOT OVER COOK. It is always better to undercook, over cooked mixtures can ignite and will not burn properly. my smoke bomb heated the can RED HOT. check out my 50 gram smoke bomb in a can also i have heard of formulations for rockets using 28.25 grams potassium nitrate, 12 grams sugar 4.5 grams sulfurANDPotassium nitrate 63% Sugar 27%Sulfur 10% i have yet to test them however...
mormanman Posted April 6, 2007 Posted April 6, 2007 yeah but i don't know about the 60:40 comp but the 5/3 kno3/sugar comp works good and to burn it quick with alot of smoke really fast add baking soda/powder (it does't matter how much you put in just don't put a butt load add accordingly) the flame gets huge
crazyboy25 Posted April 6, 2007 Author Posted April 6, 2007 thats weird i heard adding even a couple of grams of baking soda/powder made more smoke but almost no flame and a slower burn so you could throw it without worring about the neighbors yard catching on fire.i will try it but do you use baking soda or baking powder they are different.
mormanman Posted April 6, 2007 Posted April 6, 2007 i use both baking soda and baking powder and i made a big batch so that may have changed it but i was awsome and kind of scarey
mormanman Posted April 7, 2007 Posted April 7, 2007 ok i'm here now to warn you not to put the smoke bomb powder (not cooked) into a gatorade bottle and wrap it in duct tape its loud and can kill you i'm lucky to be alive
asilentbob Posted April 7, 2007 Posted April 7, 2007 Its always a good idea to record the EXACT composition of what your testing, and your observances. Taking steady video of your compositions burning also helps a lot. Otherwise you might not be able to achieve the same effect again. For instance, "Senko Hanabi" composition only glitters within a very thin range of percent KNO3, S, C changes. How dissapointing would it be to have mixed KNO3, S, C randomly and gotten an amazing effect like that, then not be able to reproduce it again because you didn't write down how much of each chemical, what kind of charcoal, consolidation method, etc? Yeah, it would suck. Write everything down! A small notebook works great! And yes, this all really belongs in the thread that already exists. We don't need a ton of threads on the same subject. Edit: Senko Hanabi:http://www.vk2zay.net/composition.php?id=37

The funny thing is I've been keeping a notebook with things that work and don't work so that I know which comps that I have tried. That way I remember what is good and which comps are crap that I've already tried so I don't do them again. I use a 3-ring binder that way I can have sections and add however many pieces of paper I want to them. So yeah if you plan on being serious, start writting. Make it like a lab report so that you know exactly what you did. Maybe later on you'll see that you did something wrong and then retry the composition the right way. I've done this already.
Mumbles Posted April 9, 2007 Posted April 9, 2007 ok i'm here now to warn you not to put the smoke bomb powder (not cooked) into a gatorade bottle and wrap it in duct tape its loud and can kill you i'm lucky to be alive Wow, that was fucking stupid. What did you honestly expect to happen? Anyway, there are plenty of other threads on smoke bombs. Please don't start a new thread for every question or comment you have. We have threads for a reason, to keep things organized.
