Merlin Posted October 26, 2016 Posted October 26, 2016 KNO3 is a group of atoms bound by molecular bonding. Each atom has a constant atomic weight. For example K is 39.098, N is 14.007 and O is 15.999.Each atom exists at the atomic level as K, N, O. When bound together by molecular bonding they form a compound which has specific charactoristics. Thus the atomic weight of KNO3 is 39.098+14.007+15.999 or 101.102. Let's say you have a container of a mixture containing 50% peanuts and 50% KNO3. The atomic weight of KNO3 is still 101.102. So if you need 100 grams of KNO3 you would have to weigh 200 grams of the mixture of peanuts and KNO3. The same is true of all chemical compounds be they ag, grade, tech grade or reagent grade. It just becomes irrelevant as you approach the purist grade.Ag grade KNO3 has roughly 5% peanuts (impurities due to the refining process) so if you want to be technical if you need 75/15/10 BP when you weight the KNO3 you would need 75/0.95 to account for 100% of the desired weight. 78.9 grams of ag grade KNO3 From reading the post I get the idea some have confused perhaps the atomic weights and % purity of the mixture.
dynomike1 Posted October 26, 2016 Posted October 26, 2016 (edited) Maybe i should have said mixing 46% Potash and 32% ammonia nitrate. Edited October 27, 2016 by dynomike1
austar Posted October 27, 2016 Author Posted October 27, 2016 Now that we have my kno3 issue sorted, i would like to know if there is such a thing as over milling your bp???Are there any benifits to extended milling times??
greenlight Posted October 27, 2016 Posted October 27, 2016 I think after 8 to 10 hours depending on you mill and media it doesn't improve much more at all and ends up clumping in one side of the mill.
OldMarine Posted October 27, 2016 Posted October 27, 2016 Alright, this weekend I plan to go to my mill site and try tossing a few 2" squares of SS 3 mesh screen in my mill as I make BP. We'll see what happens.
