weknowpyro Posted April 2, 2007 Posted April 2, 2007 This is a tutorial about making ballistics gel. Although it's not exactly related to pyrotechnics, the manufacture can relate to chemistry and also I expect a lot of people shoot on this forum and would like to know how far their bullets can penetrate. Firstly you will need: Gelatine (Found in most brewing shops).Water.Two containers (doesn't matter what they are). Firstly weigh out your gelatine powder. I use the ratio 1:10, one part gelatine to ten parts water.http://www.apcforum.net/files/PICT0324.JPG Put the gelatine into a container and slowly add the water onto it whilst stirring continuously, making sure not to much air gets trapped underneath. It should look like this now: http://www.apcforum.net/files/PICT0327.JPG Let this sit in the fridge for about 2-3 hours whilst it goes through a process known as 'blooming' and it should solidify to form a clumpy substance, which should look like this: http://www.apcforum.net/files/PICT0328.JPG Take the container and the mixture and put it into a bucket full of water which is at about 80-90 degree's centigrade, make sure the gel does go above 40 degrees centigrade otherwise it will start evaporating.http://www.apcforum.net/files/PICT0329.JPG This should be a liquid now after stirring it for about 5 mins. Now take your other container and make sure you have put cooking oil in it, this will help let the ballistics gel come out.Pour the liquid gel mix into the other container and let this set for about 24 hours in the fridge.http://www.apcforum.net/files/PICT0332.JPG Once set, knock it out of its container and there is your ballistics gel.Happy testing! 1
AcidBurn Posted April 2, 2007 Posted April 2, 2007 Nice tutorial! I've been looking for something similar quite a while, because i want to make a penetrate test of mi "weapons" collection (sling, air rifle, airsoft gun, ...), so i'm defenitly gona try out this tutorial.
asilentbob Posted April 3, 2007 Posted April 3, 2007 Just adding that KNOX brand unflavored gelitin is available at most grocery stores like HEB.
