joeyz Posted September 3, 2016 Posted September 3, 2016 (edited) we heard of whistle rocket.we heard of elephant rocket. im am testing something new im starting call "Horn Rocket". this is a small horn rocket concept i am wind tunnel testing. the concept isnt bad and made a video as food for thought. of course this concept is never meant to replace the tradition whistle comp rocket but it will be very interesting to see what annoying screams this shall produce. OldMarine Posted September 3, 2016 Posted September 3, 2016 Dude, don't explain before proving the concept. Prove it and post it!
joeyz Posted September 3, 2016 Author Posted September 3, 2016 (edited) Sorry mate, you must of had a bad friday. No worries my friend, the weekend has arrived. Wind tunnel worked, soon we see if works in flight. I hope it does, would be for new years eve coming up in 90 days. Edited September 3, 2016 by joeyz
NeighborJ Posted September 3, 2016 Posted September 3, 2016 I've posted here on another thread about when I attached a Nerf whistle to a rocket. I couldn't hear it whistle over the motor and when the motor died the whistle was too far away to hear. It was my sons idea so I wasn't gonna discourage his creativeness. You may want to try it from 3-400' away just to see if you can still hear it. Or just launch it and see. it might be neat to attach weights to them and use them as inserts. They'll whistle as they fall.
OldMarine Posted September 3, 2016 Posted September 3, 2016 I apologize for sounding gruff.I should have said: You carried the plan as far forward as laying out basic parts. I wouldn't have posted that without at least a proof of concept test.Sorry, I post failures along with success so I can find out why it failed or to strut my stuff when it goes well.
mikeee Posted September 3, 2016 Posted September 3, 2016 Oldmarine, Just like a 1970's TV show, stay tuned for next weeks part two episode of horn rockets.Hopefully they whistle on the way down and you will get a heads up with an incoming rocket.
CrossOut Posted September 3, 2016 Posted September 3, 2016 (edited) Interesting concept of like to see it work. The sound of the engine might over powder the horn but you never know till you test. One possible issue is that the air flowing into the horn will have a lower low air pressure. If you think about it like an air foil you will have low pressure in the inside of the horn and higher pressure on the outside. For your leaf blower, the blower is increasing the pressure and speed of the air. If you blew into the horn you have the same effect. As the rocket travels through the air you may need some sort of intake to funnel additional the air into the horn. Another thought.. what if you put the horn under the rocket distanced away.. horn might melt and I don't think you can get it far enough away and still retain the high pressure gases. Might be worth a try as a one time use horn. Edited September 3, 2016 by CrossOut
joeyz Posted September 4, 2016 Author Posted September 4, 2016 (edited) No problem guys. Purpose of the post is to see if anyone tried this before with any luck. In my recent test with 3 horns as in video, it didnt make any sound and it spiralled up into the sky after 100'.I think partial reason for no sound is because the horn intake was flushed against top of rocket and the flat top of rocket forced air sideways. Because the horns are tapered, it caused rocket to spiral lol Not givin up. Trying what cutout said, mount below the egine on the stick, far enough so engine doesnt melt it. Also trying something else. I got these red tubes the horns fit with pressing in. Loading a 7 round horn cyclinder. The tubes shall correct the straightness. Also the new dome at top should tamper airflow straight to the tubes instead of forcing air to the sides as with a flat nose. Will let ya know. Rubber band is just a temp until hot glued.
