jakespeed Posted May 16, 2016 Posted May 16, 2016 found several ebayers modernhomestead looked most appealing, he has his own pyro website (woodysrocks), but prices are better on ebay than his store are there better deals out there somewhere ? also, if anyone is using the frankford arsenal rotary tumbler, what size media are you using ? wondering if .490 is too small
dagabu Posted May 16, 2016 Posted May 16, 2016 Just checked, $28.50 each place plus shipping. Caleb can also custom mold sizes.
FlaMtnBkr Posted May 16, 2016 Posted May 16, 2016 FYI, Caleb is the above mentioned Woody and is a member here. He also makes a great product. Any of them including his lead media which is the hardest lead I've ever encountered.
Mumbles Posted May 16, 2016 Posted May 16, 2016 This would be him: http://www.amateurpyro.com/forums/user/19460-calebkessinger/ He occasionally runs specials on blemished lead media if you're looking for a better deal. It's every bit as functional as the normal stuff, just doesn't look as nice.
chuckufarley Posted May 16, 2016 Posted May 16, 2016 I have to agree with all the above advice. Caleb is a great guy and he has very resonable prices. I thought it would be cheaper/more fun to make my own. Well i spent about $100 more more on supplies, and many, many hours of casting(and failing) to make 50# of fairly hard lead balls. If i had to do it again I'd just buy them from Caleb and spend the time building my mill. Just my $.02 Charles
OldMarine Posted May 16, 2016 Posted May 16, 2016 I too tried pouring my own media. After alloying my lead with antimony I began pouring with a 4 ball mold. After wasting most of a weekend I had maybe a 4th of my desired 35#.I ordered a whole batch from eBay the next day.
chuckufarley Posted May 17, 2016 Posted May 17, 2016 It's a discuraging thing to see your effort wasted. I had the same problem when i started. I have a 12 cavity mold from lee and a bottom pour melter, when I first started casting I had about a 10% success rate. After ALOT of practice I got down to about a 85% success rate. It was an interesting thing to learn and i dont regret doing it, but, if I had to decide again... I think id buy them.
OldMarine Posted May 17, 2016 Posted May 17, 2016 It's raining here tonight so I got bored and am actually out in the shop pouring lead....for fishing weights! Much more productive!
jakespeed Posted May 21, 2016 Author Posted May 21, 2016 ordered & paid for 2 10# packs from woodys, but usps on brought me 1 10# pack today was really looking forward to playing with pyro this weekend i'm sure caleb will make it right, but i won't get a chance to mill again until next weekend guess i could go be productive & get some real work done
OldMarine Posted May 21, 2016 Posted May 21, 2016 I figure if I keep pouring a little at a time as the mood strikes I'll have another full mill load by the time I get around to building that double barrel mill.
starxplor Posted May 22, 2016 Posted May 22, 2016 I bought 3x 10# packs from Woody's as well. The single USPS package of all 30 lbs was left in the mailbox for my partner to find. That surprise was both amusing for me and not fun for her.

starxplor Posted May 22, 2016 Posted May 22, 2016 (edited) I'll bet the postman said a choice word or two as well! Our postal delivery person(a woman), already broke our mailbox and now digs a rut with the vehicle tire in front of the box that now tilts away from the road. I really do not care if she didn't like handling a small 30# package. Edited May 22, 2016 by starxplor
chuckufarley Posted May 22, 2016 Posted May 22, 2016 I was laughing so hard when I picked up my box of lead I had delivered. 50# of linotype in a 12"x12"x8" box. Sorry Mailman 😀 Wish I could have seen the look on his face when he picked it up the first time
otto Posted May 23, 2016 Posted May 23, 2016 Oh yeah Chuck, I'm sure mine has cussed me under their breath more than a few times. A "few" deliveries of lead products (soft lead for casting fish baits and hard type lead for media) and then this "last" box, labeled 66# on the shipping label and a UPS warning sticker for 70# +. Net weight was 52# of zirconia M cylpebs. If I can get another 50# at the price I paid I'll do it and then I'd be set. I always tell my wife: "Just leave the box on the porch. It'll be fine....."
OldMarine Posted May 23, 2016 Posted May 23, 2016 I have all my "junk" delivered to my place of work. Our dispatcher is a fan of my hobby and explains to them why they should be damned careful with every delivery. I love her fake blond self more every day!
