memo Posted November 16, 2015 Posted November 16, 2015 (edited) just had some groceries in from the wholesaler and noticed the box had a orange triangle with a 1.5 ..... what is 1.5 ? memo Edited November 16, 2015 by memo
OldMarine Posted November 17, 2015 Posted November 17, 2015 Was it a triangle or diamond? Most chem/hazard placards are diamond shaped.
Xtreme Pyro Posted November 17, 2015 Posted November 17, 2015 The 1.5 designation is for blasting agents. You can see the full lineup here:http://environmentalchemistry.com/yogi/hazmat/placards/class1-chemicals.html#Div1.5
taiwanluthiers Posted November 17, 2015 Posted November 17, 2015 (edited) I seriously doubt grocery stores will sell blasting agents... What was the product in question? I'm pretty sure it's most likely going to be aerosol cans (The box of fake snow I see at work has a clear diamond with a red stripe across the middle of the diamond on it, but no explosive designation that I know of). memo Posted November 17, 2015 Author Posted November 17, 2015 you are right EP it was a diamond 1.5 d 1 why would a grocery wholesaler even have these boxes.... they don't sell blasting agents. thanks for the link memo
Xtreme Pyro Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 you are right EP it was a diamond 1.5 d 1 why would a grocery wholesaler even have these boxes.... they don't sell blasting agents. thanks for the link memo What the heck did you order from the grocery store with a 1.5D placard?? I need to shop there more often..
taiwanluthiers Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 Maybe it was some ammonium nitrate based cool packs, but even big bags of ammonium nitrate is labeled as oxidizer and not blasting agents.
nater Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 Cases of those cold packs come marked ORM-D. Many cosmetics and cleaning supplies come this way too. 1.5d is used for insensitive compounds that do pose a risk for explosion, but that risk is very small during normal shipping conditions. Blasting caps were already mentioned. ANFO would also be shipped this way. Both of those are used in agriculture. I suspect the box was recycled from a farm the produce came from and the shipper left the label on when it should have been blacked out.
memo Posted November 21, 2015 Author Posted November 21, 2015 well damn , today at the grocery store wife was boxing up some groceries the box she grabbed was another explosives box. this one was 1.1 1d . I was thinking the boxes must be over stock and turned in for recycle. still plenty strange. 1.1 1d is gun cotton NC , NCL excetera. memo
Arthur Posted November 22, 2015 Posted November 22, 2015 Clearly boxes being recycled. In the UK it's an offence to use a hazard diamond on a box that doesn't need that diamond - those diamonds should have been blanked out or covered. Try not to draw attention to your shopping for food!
memo Posted November 22, 2015 Author Posted November 22, 2015 when I worked at a small open pit mine , we loaded the shot and then burned the bags and boxes. nothing left the site. memo
