Polumna Posted March 22, 2007 Posted March 22, 2007 hi dues I try to ball mill magnesium and Aluminiumshavings in my little ball mill( a bigger one will follow) The jar is a very big shave cream box.I have got plenty of these for other chemicals, i use stellballs as a media( for metalpowders). My ball mill has got a tumbling noise and i ball mill my Magnesiumshavings since 6h now but the shavings dont become finer. Is anything wrong here?? My ball mill rotates at around 120pm. thanks for ur advices. I open the ball mill every 30minutes to prevent spontaneous ignition. The shavings are 1mm-3mm in size polumna
Polumna Posted March 22, 2007 Author Posted March 22, 2007 hi how should i coat it and which media should i use polumna
al93535 Posted March 24, 2007 Posted March 24, 2007 You need to mill the metals for many days before you get a good reduction in size. You need to open the mill only about every 2-3 hours, especially when the metal is that coarse. When the metal becomes finer you should open it more often. The steel media should do th ejob as long as you have not over charged the mill. Just let it run and you will get a nice powder. Why not just buy the stuff though?
cplmac Posted March 24, 2007 Posted March 24, 2007 120 rpm seems kind of fast. I have a Thumbler 15 pound mill and I think it only rotates at around 50-60 rpm.
tentacles Posted March 24, 2007 Posted March 24, 2007 Larger diameter mills need to rotate slower... 120rpm still sounds too fast, I played around with the applet on passfire and found the highest speed (with like a 2" diameter) was around 96 RPM. 120 rpm may just be tossing the shavings around the outside, instead of allowing the balls to grind it, they instead just ride on top of it. What size steel balls are you using?
