pyrogenius007 Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 Hi,I have been trying to make green stars but with no success, the materials I have on hand are Barium Nitrate, Barium Carbonate, PVC, Magnesium (coated with castor oil) Potassium Chlorate and Shellac. I have tried various formulas but the result is always Yellow colour,I do not have access to Parlon, Pot.Perchlorate or Magnalium. In the past I tried out a formula for Red consisting of the following Strontium Nitrate - 55Magnesium - 28PVC - 17this was bound with Shellac diluted with Acetone, the result was very good, it gave out a Deep Red colour, I was told that replacing the Strontium with Barium would result in green colour, but the result was very bad, what could be the reason? I have also tried various formulas but they all gave out a yellow colour, can anybody give me any suggestions/advice on how to get a good green colour using the chemicals I have on hand.
Niladmirari Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 My very good green: Ba(NO3)2 - 60Mg - 20PVC - 20NC - 6
Mumbles Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 Have you ever tried a torch flame test on your barium nitrate? It should burn sort of lime yellow-green. If you have contaminated barium nitrate, you'll never get good colors out of it. Also, not the right section so I'm moving it.

Sparx88 Posted November 2, 2015 Posted November 2, 2015 Your welcome. I'm sort of a 24hr pyro addict so I enjoyed it. In the name of science .Using the magnal gives the best deep color. It's all I use now but If using mag or drk alum you can back off the amount by 4 or 5 grams and replace with sulfur.

You mean a useful color without Unobtainium, which is (per)chlorate? Awesome, thank you
