MadMat Posted September 13, 2015 Posted September 13, 2015 (edited) I was wondering if anyone has tried using dental floss for spiking smaller canister shells (2- 3"). The idea came to me as dental floss has a pretty dam strong pull break strength. Not to mention its smaller diameter and ease of tying into knots sounds like a good recipe for smaller shells. I am going to try it; was just wondering if anyone else has already. Edited September 13, 2015 by MadMat
MadMat Posted September 13, 2015 Author Posted September 13, 2015 (edited) Expensive? Nah, I can get it at the dollar store for a buck for 50 yards of it. Opps, double checked a pack of it, make that 140 yards for a buck. Edited September 13, 2015 by MadMat
DaMounty Posted September 13, 2015 Posted September 13, 2015 Interesting, let us know how it works out.
MadMat Posted October 7, 2015 Author Posted October 7, 2015 I tried out my first shell spiked with dental floss. I had a shell that was a little too big to fit in the gun with twine spiking, so I tried the dental floss. It worked great! If anyone else cares to try this just make sure you get the unwaxed floss. If its waxed your paste won't stick to it. I would have put up a video of the shell but my camcorder is in need of a new battery (presently on order).
Bcorso85 Posted October 8, 2015 Posted October 8, 2015 I use 8ply cotton string. I'm thinking about trying Jute. I roll a 3 inch canister on a 2.5 inch mandrel, 3 turns (24inches) of 70 pound Kraft. I spike 12 verticle and 6 horizontal. Then I take 30# kraft paper 24 inches or more to paste the shell. After I add the lift bag and quick match it fits nice and tight into the gun.
Sparx88 Posted October 8, 2015 Posted October 8, 2015 Floss...sounds like a good idea to me. I even played with the idea at using braided fishing line or regular triline 20 lb. bout 300 yards or so on a 1/4 lb spool for 6-12 bucks. It's something I wanted to try just got sidetracked. Yah let us know how it does.
MadMat Posted October 14, 2015 Author Posted October 14, 2015 I thought of fish line, but I figured it wouldn't hold up to the heat of the lift very well; but I suppose the pasting over the top would make it work.I used the floss... look up a couple posts. It worked just fine. The break was symmetrical. I will reiterate though get the unwaxed version. The first attempt I tried the waxed kind and pulled it all off and redid it with unwaxed.
