PIL Posted September 5, 2015 Posted September 5, 2015 I've read many posts about the choice of burst charges. Some suggested straight BP should be used for burst in 3.However,it took me 30 grams of BP to fill one hemisphere(with stars),which was quite a lot . Others pointed out that meal coated rice hulls with booster could break the shell with good symmetry. I will paste 7 layers of kraft and use 1.5 grams of whistle mix as booster.I am hoping for a hard and round break .I would like to know:Is 7:1 MCRH powerful enough to achieve a symmetrical break? How much BP should a 3 contain? Thanks
dynomike1 Posted September 5, 2015 Posted September 5, 2015 I use MCRH in all my shells, W/ 70/30. In 3" i get a good break, 4" i got to work on that.
Bcorso85 Posted September 6, 2015 Posted September 6, 2015 Dont over look a full shell. If you paste your shell, then shake it and you hear a rattle; it's not full. I like to use some hot BP, made with paulownia charcoal. I mill it for 3 hours with no dextrin, mix with alcohol and granulate, then dry. I'll ball mill it another 3 hours, screen in the dextrin, and then granulate again. for 3's Shimizu recommends H3 4:1. 7/1 with hot powder and a booster might be too much. I'd suggest starting with the BP. If it's hot you'll be fine. You're right, filling with BP grains does require more. Obviously because of less surface area.Even layers of pasting will help make a round break.

(some times i use slow flash booster) In this video (Bad filming) i use 4:1 whit 6 layers hand pasted gummed tape. I prefer 8 layers on a 3 inch whit MCHR or 10 layers on a 4 inch ect. Regards
Sparx88 Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 For 3 " I'm in the hot BP camp. Don't really need booster in the 3's but I do for the 2's. I started using mcgs grass seed and have since, ended up currently with 5/1 ratio. Not that it's better, it's what does it for me. On pasting though, I'm a little different also, I use 60 lb kraft and paste 4 layers 2 strip method overlapping at the equator. My hot BP is paulownia 77/15/8. When I do need booster it's 2-3 grams slow flash for the 2's. I tried boosting the 3's at different times and ways and found it was overkill. The stuff can be a freind but also a star destroyer. Or other things. Test test test is what it's about. I actually enjoy that part of it all
