So i was looking up how to make a coloured fountain as i now have most chemicals to make basic colours and i found this article http://www.skylighter.com/fireworks/how-to-make/colored-firework-fountains.asp

I always thought hand ramming was only done with black powder i would have never thought it would be safe to ram these coloured comps that contain kclo4 and mgal in them am i missing something here. It says to ram the igniting mixture in the tube first and thats a mixture of kclo4, sulphur and charcoal. i really want to play around making different coloured flairs or fountains and this article looks very easy to do i just want to make sure its safe thanks.

Those compositions can be rammed, but be careful. Don't pound on them like you would a rocket, consider it more of a tamping action until the composition just feels compacted. If you use Ti for sparks, I would use spherical Ti, again make sure you are being careful. Good welders gloves would be smart PPE to protect your hands.

Pressing is safer and would be preferred. These don't need high loading pressure, so an arbor press or a press using a simple hydraulic jack would be ideal.

Remember that this is pyro, NOTHING is totally safe! Actually it's LIFE nothing is totally safe.

However many pyro things work without much hazard or risk, AND you can do lots of simple things to minimise both Hazard and Risk, After that there is PPE. Full body cover overalls and gloves is a good plan, new comp then go for a facemask too.
